Warsaw

by Sjalen

A capital is always a capital. What is fascinating in Warsaw though, is the mix of new and old that gave the city its atmosphere to me. Most famous is of course the old town square which you can see in my intro picture. Completely destroyed in the war and painstakingly restored to full glory, it is today a good place to stroll around or sit in a café. Nearby is also the castle and other sights but the city has so much more I hope to discover more of such as the jewish legacy and Chopin memories. In the picture, you see the legacy of the Cold War like in so many other Eastern European and Russian cities - a fascinating building.

Krakow

This is one of the gems of not only Poland but Europe! There are so many things to see here I don't know where to start but the main square with the old market halls and the church is where we began. Unfortunately, I have no pictures as we only stayed here a short while (much in the dark evening) due to "Spader" being sensitive to the bad air at the time. I hope and think it has become better even since then and I will absolutely go back. If you want to see a really good page that does Krakow justice, look at KennetRose's.

Zakopane

by Sjalen

The only reason we ended up here was because I saw a picture of it in a Swedish encyclopedia where I looked up Poland and it captured my imagination! My absolute favourite for many reasons. Firstly, the great Tatra mountains spellbound me completely, secondly, the wooden architecture is fantastic. We came here with the night train from Warsaw and what a feeling it was to get off and discover the mountains. I have never been to it in winter but since it hosted the Winter Olympics it seems to be quite popular as a winter destination. In summer it is gorgeous and the only thing I regret is that I never made it up to Morskie Oko, the lake in the mountains., although I have been told it is quite crowded up there in high season.

Wroclaw

by cheekymarieh

Wroclaw is the fourth largest city in Poland (after Warsaw, Lodz and Krakow) and is the capital of Lower Silesia. It lies on the River Odra and there are four other smaller rivers within the city plus numerous streams. It is a major industrial, commercial, and cultural centre. At the end of World War II the Germans declared the city as a fortress. It was during this time that about 70 percent of the city was destroyed. On the 6th May 1945 it became Polish again. The town was originally built on the island of Ostrow Tumski – which is no longer an island. The main places to visit are the gothic Town Hall, Rynek, the cathedral and Ostrow Tumski.

Zakopane

It is set in a valley surrounded by peaks and alpine meadows and is the main ski and hiking resort in Poland. The town lies close to the foot of Mount Giewont. There are short mountain hikes around the region which are clearly signposted. They lie within the boundaries of the Tatrzanski Park Narodowy. The entrance to the park is at the end of ul. Strazyska. The hikes vary from 2 ½ - 6 hours. It is cheaper than your average European ski destination and just as beautiful. If you don't feel too energetic you can always take the funicular up Gubalowka or take a cable car up Mount Kasprowy Wierch. There is some stunning scenery from the these spots. We found them particularly busy with skiers when we went up the cable car towards the end of February.

Oswiecim / Auschwitz

by cheekymarieh

'There is a place on earth,a desolate heath, where the shadows of the dead are multitudes, where the living are dead, where there is only death, hate, and pain.'(Giuliana Tedeschi - There Is A Place On Earth)The camp brings home the reality of the annihilation of the Jews. This is one of the largest camps of World War 2. Admission is free though there is a small fee to enter the cinema. It is worth remembering that nobody under the age of 14 is allowed to enter. This is a place where you don't hear or see birds. There seems to be an unbelievable silence as you walk around the former concentration camp. It is hard to imagine that once the camp would have been filled with screams of terror and people crying. As you wander around the camp you can see various buildings. Most obvious of all is the creamtorium where thousands perished. You can also see the showers where the gas was dispensed from...

Gdansk

by cheekymarieh

The city is also often referred to by its German name of Danzig. It is a major sea port and the birthplace of Solidarnosc (Solidarity). If you visit the city you must visit the much publicised shipyard area with its memorials. As with several polish cities, there has been much restoration work needed after the bombings of World War II. About 90 % of the city was destroyed and much of the old area was rebuilt to its former state. The main historicalsightseeing area of the city lies along the area known as the Royal Way - an area about 1/3 mile in length. Here you will find the Upland Gate, the Foregate, the Golden Gate, the Town Hall, the Historical Museum of Gdansk, the Neptune Fountain, the Golden House and the Green Gate.St Mary's Church in the main part of the town is well worth a visit too - if only to climb up to the top to admire some spectacular views of the city.

Torun

by cheekymarieh

Torun is noted for its gothic architecture. It has narrow streets and large churches. It has a walled old town with the new town being located outside these walls. The old town is based around the market square (Rynek). Here the most important attractions are the Town Hall and the Church of the Holy Spirit. The most important citizen of the town is the astronomer Nicholas Copernicus. He is the man who decided that the earth revolved around the sun. There is a museum dedicated to him and his works.Other places well worth visiting are the Cathedral of St's John the Baptist and John the Evangelist and the ruins of the castle that was built by the Teutonic Kinights.Torun lies on the banks of the River Vistula. It is from a bridge crossing the river that you will get the best view of the city.

The Wilanow Palace of Warsaw

by Paul2001

the Wilanow is the most important and pleasing of Warsaw's palaces. The complex itself takes up several buildings that are leisurely situated about the palace grounds. These grounds are imaculately kept which makes for a trip to this splendid palace a worthy daytrip from the City Centre of Warsaw. The palace itself has a striking yellow facade and was built in the late 17th century. Inside the palace are many rooms and chambers with artworks that are of varying degrees of interests. These included many frescos and portraits of Polish nobility. Most are Baroque in style and are therefore quite lavish.

Gdansk's Maritime Museum

by Paul2001

The Maritime Museum (Muzeum Morskie) of Gdansk is the largest such museum in all of the Poland. The museum occupies several restored granaries on both sides of the River Motlawa. This includes the famed Zuraw Gdanski or the Gdansk Crane which was the biggest medieval crane in all of Europe. There is also the "Soldek", a ship that is moored by the museum in the Motlawa. This was the first shipped to built in Gdansk after World War II. It is slippery when wet as I found out. There is a ferry that frequently crosses the river so you can visit the whole museum with little trouble. Throughout the museum buildings themselves are very interesting exhibits about Gdansk's place in maritime history. Much of this was news to me. Gdansk was at one time the most important port on the Baltic. The displays here proved to be very educational even if they were are labelled in Polish only. In hindsight, I...
