KRAKOW : WIELICZKA SALT MINE

by swesn

This is listed as one of UNESCO’s World Cutural Heritage monuments. Salt mining had been carried out at this spot since the 11th century. A huge network of chambers and tunnels ensued, up to 9 levels in total, to a depth of over 300m.There are salt sculptures, usually about the history, practices, even legends of salt-mining, carved out of salt. The salt was 90% pure, mixed with gravel and sand, giving it a greenish tinge. One section even has gnomes! The timber used to construct the shafts, stairs and tunnel-supports, are dated from 300+ years ago. The salt in the air had preserved the wood. Ironically, some of the salt sculptures are 'eroded' away either by itchy fingers from tourists or moisture from the air. The most impressive sight is the huge chamber-church which looks as big as a regular church. In fact, weddings can be held here. Everything is carved from salt. The chandeliers...

KRAKOW : ANCIENT CAPITAL OF POLAND

by swesn

Krakow was the only major city in Poland to survive WWII nearly undamaged. It has been listed by UNESCO as one of the world’s twelve most significant historic sites. In the heart of the Old Town is the main square, Rynek Glowny, bordered by a ring of park called Planty. This was the largest square of medieval Europe and now, an earnest pigeon-rearing farm. Watch out where you walk lest you crush some tiny bones under your feet. There are numerous beautiful and charming mediaval houses and towers around.I believe many cultural activities are held here at Rynek Glowny. Truly, a cosy and lovely town.

wroclaw

by mariquita

wroclaw was our base in Poland. IT used to be a German city, but the entired population was evacuated to Germany after the war and the city was repopulated with Poles that came from the Eastern part of Poland, that had been taken by the Soviet Union. This country has indeed suffered a lot.The city was bombed during the war, but many buildings have been reconstructed.

The Ratusz (Town Hall) of Poznan

by Paul2001

The Ratusz dominates Poznan's beautiful Stary Rynek. This originally Gothic structure was almost completely rebuilt in the 1550's making it one of the most impressive Renaissance Era buildings in all of Poland. The Ratusz has a marvelous clock tower. Inside of the building is a museum that is dedicated to the history of Poznan. Sadly I did not have the time to visit it.

The only German Railway Station in Poland

by Sourisseau

One of the most curious things forrailway hikers in Germany or Polandis the station "Krzewina Zgorzelecka"("Ostritz" on german). The german trains from Zittau to Görlitzgo a good 10 km over polish teritory, with a stop in that Station. It`s a very old station ,almost notchanged since World War II.There is even a small Shopwhere you can buy Polish bread, vodka and other souvenirs.(full german tax-free rates for tourists)If you go over the bridge behind thestation you`re back in Germany, where is good accomodation available.(Hotel Neisseblick)You can also go up the hill to smallpolish villages (no pubs, sorry)and take a worker`s bus to Turow(Coal mine and power plant),or Sinieawka near Zittau (one ofthe largest polish markets),you have to change the bus in Bogatynia then.In Sinieawka, after shopping, you can travelon to the czech border (leave the busin Porajow) and go by foot to Czech...

Wroclaw

by martin_nl

Wroclaw, the capital of Lower Silesia, is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Poland. It is a very picturesque city and the Town Hall (or in polish it's called Ratusz) perfectly describes that. It is situated on Rynek, which is the market square. It is a beautiful building with a lot of details. I really love the clock!!

Stroll Through Warsaw's Park Lazienkiowski

by Paul2001

The Park Lazienkiowski is the most important park in Warsaw. For my money it is one of the great city parks in Europe and that is considering that I visited in the pouring rain. The park is very leafy and green full of tree lined pathways where there are many a peacock wandering around. However what makes the park so enjoyable is the Palac Lazienkowski which straddles across a park lake. This palace was designed in a Neo-Classical style in the late 18th century for the last king of Poland, King Stanislaw August. It's position on the lake is quite striking. Inside of the palace is good but not great collection of art with a Rubens here and a Rembrandt there. The king's personal apartments are displayed here having been reconstructed after the palace was damaged by the Nazis. Throughout the park there are other interesting buildings commissioned by King Stanislaw including a Greek theatre,...
