Yes, it's an ugly introduction to Warsaw, but inevitably almost every traveller to the city will begin or end their journey at Warszawa Centralna, or the Central Train Station of Warsaw. This museum of old-time railroad engineering opened on the former Warsaw railway station on the day of the 150th anniversary of the Nikolaevskaya (presently Oktyabrskaya or October) railroad. The exposition presents about 85 locomotives plus various wagons. In addition one can see old-time snow-ploughs, trolleys, signal posts, repair cranes, hydraulic pumps and other railroad engineering facilities, located on the rails near the station. All the exhibits have historical value. The total number of pieces in the museum's collection exceeds 170, with the exhibits having been gathered from all over Russia and CIS. From 1991 the Museum was located at the Shushary station (not far from St. Petersburg), and by the 150th anniversary of the Moscow - St. Petersburg line opening it has just moved to the Warsaw railway station in the northern capital. Now on the railway lines within the old station platform complex, more than 80 restored items have found refuge, including different classes of steam engines, diesel locomotives and even railway artillery mounts. In a city of museums, there are not many situated in the open air like this one. Each visitor has the opportunity not only "to touch the exhibits", but also to be photographed on the step of any loco or carriage he likes. The authenticity of the atmosphere is occasionally supported by recordings of railway sounds in the background.
The Warsaw railway station (Varshavsky Vokzal) in St. Petersburg has ended its existence as an ordinary railway terminus. On 5th August, 2001, a museum was opened here. The Museum of Railway Machinery named after V. V. Chubarov, na Varshavskom vokzale. Chubarov was head of the October railway and the first curator of this museum.
The Presidential Palace (in Polish, Pa³ac Prezydencki; also known as Pa³ac Koniecpolskich, Lubomirskich, Radziwi³³ów, and Pa³ac Namiestnikowski) in Warsaw, Poland, is the elegant classicist latest version of a building that has stood on the Krakowskie Przedmieœcie site since 1643
The Cathedral is the oldest gothic church in Warsaw, the church where coronation of many Polish kings took place. It survived Warszawa Uprising in 1944, but being an important symbol for Poles, it was blown up by Germans afterwards. The Cathedral is at ul. Swietojanska 8 in The Old Town.
In reality this lovely building has never been a proper palace. It was designed by Antonio Corazzi and built in 1820-23 by a foundation established by Stanislaw Staszic. The original facade disappeared under numerous remodeling projects, and it looked a bit like the Kremlin by the end of the 19th century, when it was used as an Orthodox church. The original facade was restored in the 1920s, and the building survived World War II without overwhelming damage. Today it serves as the seat of the board of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Warsaw's symbol is the mermaid. She appears in statue form in Old Town's Market Square and on the Warsaw coat of arms, but when you travel to Poland's capital city, you will probably spot the image of this mythical creature worked into architectural details and used as a part of business logos. Many legends exist that describe how the mermaid came to symbolize Warsaw. A popular version of this story tells of how the mermaid named Sawa was rescued from capture by a man named Wars. Because of Wars' kindness, Sawa vowed to protect the city. Warsawa (Warsaw) became the name of the city and the mermaid is shown with a sword and shield in recognition of her promise to protect the city.
Built in the 14th century as a wooden fortress for the Dukes of Mazovia, the castle became a royal residence when King Sigmund III Vasa made plans to move the Polish capital to Warszawa from Krakow in 1569. The castle then remained the seat of the monarchy and the Sejm (Polish parliament) for almost 250 years
