Poland general

Real Poland and an itinerary for 21 days (season not mentioned)- quite a difficult question. For castles and palaces look at (in Polish):http://zamki.net.pl/wojewodztwami.phpDolny Slask and Malopolska is quite dotted by them on my castles map .I will give you my idea about unique places in Poland (but I still don’t know the country well hahaha)Let’s start from south and Germany (former- hahaha) called Dolny Slask. This area is well known for mountains, castels and manors, and historical cities.Hiking in Gory Stolowe for sure (one day is an absolute minimum by car). You can see in Klodzko that after Germans displacement after IIWW it has still social impact in this area. Wroclaw has an interesting main square. There are also few Unesco heritage places on this territory like peace of Westphalia churches in Swidnica and Jaworze, which I haven’t seen yet.If you want to visit three states in...

Szczecin (Stettin)

by Leipzig

Szczecin is situated in the northwest of Poland, close to the Baltic Sea. Due to its membership in the Hanseatic League the city has grown to a rich and powerful port.Today's centre of Szczecin consists of many well-restored old buildings and even the sourroundings attract with beautiful Gruenderzeithaeuser (houses built around 1900) but also several modern block buildings. The combination of old and new gives the city an unique character. If you are interested in Szczecin's history, take a look at this website

Gdansk (Danzig)

by Leipzig

Gdansk can look back on more than thousand years of town history. It is located at the mouth of the Vistula River on the Baltic Sea and was once the free port of the Hanseatic city of Danzig. Like a lot of Polish towns, Gdansk lay in ruins after WWII. After restoration it now offers numerous sights.Gdansk played a central role in the development of the Polish Solidarity Union. Lech Walesa organized a series of strikes in Gdansk's shipyards in the 1980s and as the movement succeeded, Walesa became president of Poland.I was very impressed of the centre. Although the town suffered a lot from bomings during WW2, the whole centre had been restored to its old charm.

Westerplatte

by Leipzig

Westerplatte is an island north of Gdansk. In this place the Second World War began as the German Cruiser "Schleswig-Holstein" started to fire on that place. Today there is the 25 m high monument (photo), which is situated on a hill. There is also a museum that shows some photos and military stuff of WW2.It is a very interesting and informative island and should be on your travel list when you are in the area of Gdansk.

Malbork (Marienburg)

by Leipzig

Malbork is a small town near Elblag. Main attraction is without any doubt the world's biggest and most impressing castle. The construction of this Gothic Teutonic castle began in 1275. In 1309 Malbork became the Teutonic Order`s capital. Since 1997 the entire fortress complex has been in the UNESCO World Heritage List. You cannot visit the castle on your own. A guide is necessary. As far as I remember a guide costs 22 Zloty (5 Euro). Not too, much for this castle but we didn't have the time (3 hours). I will come back to visit the interior. If you are interested in this castle you should read VT-Member matcrazy1's page. Very detailed!!

Olsztyn (Allenstein)

by Leipzig

Olsztyn, or Allenstein as it is called in German, was founded in 1351. In 1353 the castle was erected on a hill next to the town. Allenstein became famous due to the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus who lived and worked in the city in the years 1516-1521.The town suffered a lot from bombings in World War Two. It passed to Poland in 1945 and its centre was rebuilt to its former charme.

Tip Photo
Zgorzelec (Görlitz)

by Leipzig

Zgorzelec is located in the very southwest of Poland. The town was divided after the Second World War into the German city of G?rlitz and the Polish city of Zgorzelec. Today both parts can easily be visited due to the European unification. You just need your passport (pertaining to Europeans at least)Most parts of the historic centre are in the German part. Here you find almost completely restored historic centre with architectural gems of the past 500 years.Zgorzelec is a paradise for German smokers and car drivers - as the taxes on tabacco and oil are much higher in Germany people cross the border just to buy tabacco items or to refuel their car.

Tip Photo
Tychy (Tichau)

by Leipzig

Tychy is a functional city in the south of Katowice (Kattowitz). First mentioned in the year 1467, it has grown from a small fishing and hunting village to a city with over 130,000 inhabitants. The city is known all over Poland because of its beer. Me either have known this city just because of their beer - and because of VT Member matcrazy1 who lives here.

Tip Photo
Wroclaw (Breslau)

by Leipzig

Wroclaw (Breslau) is the capital of Lower Silesia and with 640,000 inhabitants the fourth largest city of Poland. It is located on Odra River (Oder) half way between Kracow and Berlin. The city is an important industrial and communication center for. Wroclaw suffered a lot from bombings during World War II. Fortunately it was reconstructed to its former glance and is perhaps one of the most beautiful cities of Central Europe.
