Polish Highways

by pieter_jan_v

Poland is working hard to improve and extend their highways; the Polish government hopes to construct over 2,500km of motorway by 2015. There is a strange mix of highways in the country. Old ones, without shoulders, newer ones built with EU-money and private toll highways. The speed limit is 130 km/hr, but often limited to 110.

Toll road

by pieter_jan_v

The A4 highway between Katowice and Krakow, known as the Małopolska Motorway, is a 61 km long toll road; the first in Poland. At entering and leaving the highway you pay PLN 8.00.In 1997 Autostrada Wielkopolska S.A. of Poznañ, on the basis of the decision issued by the Minister of Transport and Maritime Economy of Poland was granted the Concession for the development, upgrading and operation of the A2 Toll Highway.

Highway facilities

by pieter_jan_v

There are plenty gas stations and rest stops at the Polish highways. Major credit cards are accepted and many businesses operate 24/7 (especial for truckers). The newest highways have the latest facilities and have a spacious design.

Krakow-Praha

by 68maciek

I'm not a specialist in the train travel but I do (or did) it from time to time. I believe couchets carriages are mixed, but sleeping ones are always one sex only (or family). The number of beds depends on the price.BTW. I'm not sure if you like Gypsy style of travelling (hahahaha) but...Mind you that if you heading to Praha you can stop in Wroclaw (as you once considered it in the forum).Probably no overnight train from there to Praha but Klodzko and Hradec Kralove are on the way.If you go by direct train from Krakow you will pass some interesting places like Olomounc, Pardubice, Kolin (obviously rather not for the night train).

Krakow-Lviv

by 68maciek

It depends. My view is.The most comfortable, but probably the longest (for some) the night train. The cheapest: the night (can be day one) domestic train-by local transport to Medyka- pedestrian check point- marshrutka. The quickest by bus (probably).

Trains in Poland

by DueSer

Trains seem to have troubles in Poland - not sure why exactly but just to warn you, if you are trying to plan your schedule, give yourself an entire day to get out of Poland because, if you have a connection you probably won't make the connecting train.I was trying to go from Krakow to Bratislava. There was either an overnight train or a day train connecting in Breclav, Czech Republic. The lady at the Krakow train station said there was no problem making a 5 minute connection between trains. Well, there was. Just over the border into the Czech Republic we stopped as the train split and half of it went to Vienna and half went to Prague. It took a very long time to do this but I wasn't worried. I assumed they considered the time it took to do this into the train's scheduled arrivals. Nope.We were 20 minutes late into every station after that switch and so, of course, we were 20 minutes...

The Hitchiker's Guide to Poland

by bobs12

The first time I ever hitchiked in my life was in Poland. My car broke down near the Lithuanian border and I had to get to Slovenia. I ended up hitching all the way across Poland and into Berlin, and learned a lot about hitching along the way.1) Thumbing at the side of the road is pretty useless. Hardly anyone ever stops. Instead, aim to hitch from service station to service station.2) Thumbing at service sations is pretty useless. Hardly anyone ever stops. You have to approach people while they're out of their cars. Ask them if they're going in your direction. EVERY SINGLE DRIVER who was going in my direction gave me a lift when I hitched this way. Have a list of the main towns on your route on a piece of paper - most drivers will get the point that any of the towns is good enough.3) Pay attention to car registration numbers. The first few letters denote the city where the car is...

Trains Krakow-Warsaw

by adin

What I find difficult to understand is why people tend to look for info about trains in Poland on otehr then official time table of Polish Rail Company. In English: http://rozklad-pkp.pl/bin/query.exe/en?Make sure you have the date correct, might be changes between weekend/holiday and weekdays. For direct (non stop) trains on Krakow-Warsaw route:Krakow main station is: Krakow Glowny (you'll be asked to choose, if not typed properly).Warsaw Central station is: Warszawa CentralnaThe conditions:Take only EX or IC trains, duration of journey is 2 hours 55 min. make sure you have the tickets with seat reservation card. First class in IC trains is the best, no really needed unless you have legs long as basketball player's and wish to stretch them out comfortably. only 6 passengers in a compartment (3 each side, facing each other). You can have free complementary dry biscuit, useful only if you...

Driving in Poland

by Pawtuxet

I wanted to share my experiences as an alternative to all you have read. We rented a car in Warsaw and my husband drove south to Czestochowa and eventually Krakow. We had no problems. I drove from Krakow w/ Gosia (who has never driven but could read the Polish signs) and we were all over the back roads up to Kolbuszowa, then to Kazimierz Dolny and eventually Warsaw. On another trip I drove Gosia and I from Warsaw south to Sandomierz then Kolbuszowa and back north again to Warsaw. I frequently drive the entire northeast corridor of U.S. and believe me, if you can drive in Boston...Poland is a piece of cake. Their roads are smaller, but lots of construction and conditions improving with each trip. Also far more petro stations than on earlier trips. Their idea of heavy traffic doesn't compare to Boston, NYC, or Rome. I loved all my experiences along the way...saw some very charming...
