The city provides the following sports and leisure facilities:
- yacht club (Paprocany Lake),
- indoor swimming pool (renovated recently with water-slides added!),
- sports stadium (for football players),
- tennis courts (by GKS Tychy sport stadium - covered as well),
- carting track,
- winter stadium (for ice-skating and hockey fans).
Equipment: Skates for figure skating are available (to rent) at winter stadium. Better bring your own :-).
Hockey is one of the most popular sports activity in Tychy. You may practice or watch it in winter stadium.
Why hockey? It dates back 1990, when Mariusz Czerkawski (born 1972) played in GKS Tychy hockey team. He and GKS Tychy was on the top of hockey in Poland that time.
Czerkawski left Tychy for Sweden in 1991and he became the top hockey player in Sweden (1991-1994 in Djurgarden IF Stockholm). He became one of the top NHL hockey players when he had moved to America in 1994. He played in Boston Bruins, Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders then (from Sept 2002) in Montreal Canadiens - poor man, must learn French quickly :-). Now he is top hockey player back in New York Islanders.
Less know (in my opinion) is the second NHL hockey player from Tychy, born in 1973 in Tychy, Poland
- Krzysztof Oliwa. He plays in Calgary Flames, Canada now. Before he played in Boston Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins and New Jersey Devils. Haha, he is the great fighter, 4th in NHL in... penalties (937 minutes since 1998!).
Equipment: The equipment to play hockey is available only for members of GKS Tychy club. But you can rent skates and try figure skating in winter stadium (open to public all the year except hockey matches and technical breaks).
Tychy has a number of sports clubs, including the ice hockey team of the GKS Tychy sports club and soccer (European football) team of the GKS Tychy sport's club.
A number of sports events enjoying domestic and international recognition are held there. The most important of these are:
- All Family Bicycle Race,
- obstacle race,
- international bicycle race "4 Aces of Fiat Auto Poland".
Tychy also holds annual open city championships in table tennis, badminton, tennis, swimming, and volleyball.
Because of Mariusz Czerkawski big international career hockey is one of the most popular sports activity in Tychy. You may watch it in winter stadium.
Mariusz Czerkawski married famous Swedish actress, singer and model Isabella Scorupco in 1996. Scorupco was born in Poland in1970 and she left Poland for Sweden in 1978. She made her Hollywood debut in Martin Campbell’s "Golden eye", playing Natalya Simonova, a beautiful and resourceful Russian computer specialist, the film was released in the summer of 1995.
Then he played in "Vertical limit" directed by Martin Campbell. "Vertical limit" is an action movie about a rescue operation on the mountain K2, where Izabella plays a tough mountain climber.
Have you seen the above movies? No? Watch them, both are great!
Mariusz Czerkawski and Izabella Scorupco have daughter Julia (born 1997). They divorced in 2000.
Parents of Mariusz Czerkawski live close to me, and Czerkawski visits them at least twice a year.
Equipment: The matches of hockey first division are played usually on Saturday or Sunday.
