Things to Do

The cost of Project Giant

The cost of Project Giant, Walim

alancollins Says:  There is a small memorial at the site of the Walim Tunnels. Slave labour was used to bore out the tunnels and thousands lost their lives. A lot of the labour for the tunnels came from the Gross-Rosen Concentration Camp.

Video footage of the tunnels

Video footage of the tunnels, Walim

alancollins Says:  I felt cheated in a way because a simple crib sheet in English would have really helped a great deal. But I have no idea how many visitors are from other countries and whether this warrants it. For those who understand Polish I shot some video footage in the tunnels and left...

Walim Tunnels

Walim Tunnels, Walim

alancollins Says:  There are 9km of tunnels and 30 entrances but not all of the entrances and tunnels have been explored because they were blown up at the end of the war. It is also rumored that there may be deposits of uranium and the Polish Government has kept the area closed off for years...

Project Riese

Project Riese, Walim

alancollins Says:  The tunnels were started in 1943 at part of Project Riese (Giant). Prisoners from the Gross-Rosen Concentration Camp, slave labour and prisoners of war were used to tunnel into the rock. It cost a vast amount of money and lives. The mountain was crisscrossed with miles of...

Guided tour

Guided tour, Walim

alancollins Says:  You are taken into a tunnel and an enthusiastic guide shows you diagrams and I believe gives a history of the tunnels. He was quite happy to answer questions from members of the group I was with, but only in Polish. You are taken into another tunnel that is much larger than...

Walim Tunnels

Walim Tunnels, Walim

alancollins Says:  After 40 minutes the visit ends and you are left to wander around looking at some artefacts. I’m not sure why but when I left Wroclaw it was a normal sunny day but around Walim it was blowing almost a gale

Walim Tunnels

Walim Tunnels, Walim

alancollins Says:  The site is approached via a one way road and it has a car park. There is only one shop and this is where you purchase a ticket. There is no English spoke or any signs in English. It’s Polish or nothing. You have to wait to enter the tunnels in a group and with a guide. The...

What to Pack

Coats & Boots

Coats & Boots, Walim

alancollins Says:   The tunnels are damp, cold and with water dropping from the roof and because of this the ground is wet with numerous puddles. I would suggest taking a warm coat and good boots or walking shoes.

I had not heard of the Walim Tunnels, located in the Sowie Mountains until Magor65’s husband Roman suggested that with my interest in modern history the area might be worth a visit. I drove there from...
