Communication

by Leipzig

Okay, this is not really a warning but I didn't know how else to categorize this info.I noticed that most Polishs do not speak English. In major towns I could communicate in German very well but in rural ares it sometimes was quite difficult. however, polishs are very helpful and with a piece of paper, a pencil and a little talent to draw you can get everything you want. If you want to know the content of a sign or a schedule just ask yougner people. They usually know some basic English.Concerning a menu card it sometimes is more exciting just to point on a word and get suprised what you get. That's how I eat in foreign countries.

The polish currency called the Zloty was denominated in 1995 so the note shown in the photo is no longer in circulation. If you are going to Poland and have these notes from a prevous trip then they will not be of any use. ............................................THANKS TO gosia PL FOR NEW INFORMATION

the weather gods

by call_me_rhia

Except for summer, the weather gods can be unkind in Poland. I guess it's better to be prepared for all kinds of weather in Poland. I went in April, for Easter - and a week before my Polish friend had assured me it was warm (true, then) and people were outside in the t-shirts and sandals... by the time I arrived it had started to snow and everyone was freezing. I must add that Poland under the snow is very suggestive, but only if you have tought of packing very warm cloths

Beware of Pickpockets at the Bus Station in Krakow

by Paul2001

I had heard that you had to watch out for pickpockets at the train and bus stations in Poland and now I know this from experience. After getting off of the bus at the station in Krakow, I went to the baggage compartment of the bus and reached for my bag. As I did so I could feel this fellow almost leaning on top of me. I knew immediately that something was not right about this and reached for my wallet. It was gone! Fortunately I caught a glimpse of the guy who had pinched it just before he made his attempt. I noticed that he actually had not been on the bus and was hanging around the bags. As he tried to walk away unnoticed, I gave chase like a maddog. He promptly ran away as fast as he could but not before he decided to drop my wallet. I felt very happy of course that I retained my wallet but I am well aware of the fact that I was lucky. I also had a more feeble attempt on my...

CITY TRANSPORT INCONVENIENCES

by swesn

Note last tram and last bus time. Public transportation cease by around mid-night. If you are taking a very early or very late tram or bus, you need to buy your ticket BEFOREHAND for the some RUCH kiosks where you buy the tickets may be closed by evening or may not be opened yet.

Car Drivers!

by Ash59

Watch yourself as you cross the street. Jay walking is not against the law but when I say that polish drivers don’t take much notice of pedestrians when they use proper crossing points, you may understand that jay walking is not advisable. Polish drivers tend to drive faster than the speed limit and the often heard squeal of brakes usually means that they have not noticed someone crossing the road again (although I did not actually see any accidents while I was there). If you have a choice and have to cross a busy road, if there is a pedestrian crossing with traffic lights controlling the flow of cars, use them. It is definitely safer than at any other point. If you have to use a pedestrian crossing where there are no traffic lights, you have to wait for a break in the traffic on your side of the road. Start crossing and the motorists on the opposite lane SHOULD stop for you but make...

Roads

by Ash59

The roads in Poland are not well maintained. They can be pot holed and uneven, so travelling for a long time in a car/coach/bus can be uncomfortable. Part of the problem with the main highways is the trucks that travel to and from Russia on their way to the Baltic ports. In places, these have left 200mm (8”) runnels in the roads where their wheels normally run. It is said that in places, a lorry can set its front wheels in these ruts and then the driver can go to sleep until he reaches his destination as the lorry will just follow the direction of the ruts. True or not, it makes for a good story.

Do the natives understand English?

by matcrazy1

About english-polish communicationEnglish is still not widely spoken in Poland (even by police and officials). The exceptions are the following: bigger cities, younger population (I mean upto 30yo), some popular tourist destinations. More and more Poles learn foreign languages (90,6% of Polish kids learn English and 61,5 % German at schools - official dates for school year 1988/1999) and the situation improves rapidly. But people always - in remote areas especially - want to help you even if they don't know any word in language you speak. The best way in such situation is to write down in polish what you need. So, have a piece of paper and a pen (or palmtop) with you. Use the specific polish letters. If you don't, sometimes you may be misunderstood. Look at my next 'Warning or Dangers'  Copy and print or put inside your palmtop the polish-english vocabulary. If you buy a ticket in the...

Polish specific letters

by matcrazy1

Polish specific lettersIf you write in Polish try to use the specific polish letters (look at enclosed picture). If you don't, sometimes you may be misunderstood. For example polish word 'kat' written with specific polish letter ('a' with tail - small wavy line under) means 'angle' while 'kat'written normally means 'executioner, hangman'. Sometimes it maybe enjoyable but sometimes not.

'The railroad we found on the map does not seem to provide direct service to Warsaw!'Check the schedule before - on the internet or any station!'That nasty man in a weird uniform has something agains us camping and having a bonfire in this gorgeous forest!' - Well, probably you have met a forest ranger. Camping in the woods is generally not allowed. Fire is prohibited in and close to the forest because of forest fire danger - very real in the summer. If you want to camp in the nature I would recommend banks of rivers or non-cultivated rural areas. If you suppose that the land may be cultivated or is anyhow fenced better try to find the owner and get his permission - it will usually be granted. 'The last bus left 10 minutes ago! How can we get out this tiny village before tomorrow? - Few opportunities: you can try hitchhiking (works pretty well provided there is any traffic) or look...
