If you're driving in Poland,...

by katmag

If you're driving in Poland, watch out for trams. Most cities have these little street trains, and they appear out of nowhere next to you, since their tracks are usually right in the middle of the street. This makes driving somewhat complicated, as you have to look out for not only other cars, and jaywalking pedestrians, but also the trams.

by a.g.roberts

During the end of May or beginning of June the entire public school population of Poland heads out for class trips. We had no idea about this phenomenon and found ouselves in hostels with about a zillion hyperactive Polish children. If you don't like noise it would be best to try and plan your trip to the major centres at another time. It also makes it extremely difficult to find rooms sometimes. During our stay in Krakow we had to change lodgings a couple of times because the one we were in was booked by a school group for the following night.

by a.g.roberts

Don't bring your dirty clothes to Poland! The only laundromat we could find in Warsaw had a three day wait to get your clothes done. We tried to find one in Krakow as well but after a long cab ride and a lot of walking all we could find was a dry cleaners who would only wash very specific items of clothing. Luckily the lady who ran the hostel in Krakow was kind enough to do a load of laundry for us free of charge! We gave her a little something anyways because we were so thankful (and stinky!).

When visiting Krakow, you certainly must take a walk at the oval park surroundig the center of the city. But beware not to drink alcohol in this park. It's strongly prohibited! Police will not hesitate to give you a fine, even if you are only a tourist who really had no idea...

Well, it's old story now... I was 26 hours there waiting in Poland-Lithuania border to get home at 1994. The line of waiting cars and trucks was 12 km long. People were ungry. And when it was night this van had burned. It's of cource better on this border now. Usually it takes less than 2 hours to get over the border if everything is OK. But trucks must still wait for a long time.

by Broekie

I drove to Poland by car and the two things that I disliked in Polish roads were: 1) Sometimes the railway tracks are above the street level. When passing them with more then moderate speed, you just might wreck your car. 2) Secondary roads sometimes seem to be 'worn out' where the wheels or your car are. This results in the bottom of your car being closer to the road then usual. This might result in damage to your exhaust pipe.

Crime is still a problem in...

by vilkas

Crime is still a problem in Poland, but is apparently nowhere near as bad as it was in the early 1990s. There is still a fair amount of corruption, too: I was witness to one instance of police bribery and I'm told that police routinely stop non-Polish vehicles for trivial offences in order to get bribes - some of this stuff happens at border crossings as well. But much of the talk about crime directed at tourists in Poland and other parts of eastern Europe is overblown. If you are careful not to make yourself a target you should have no problems.

The condition of many streets...

by sphynxxs

The condition of many streets in Poland is rather poor, even though there are plans for a network of autostradas. Unfortunately, they are very expensive, so nobody expects good streets in the next few years.Speeding is a problem on the streets, and many drivers are quite reckless when it comes to get ahead. You´ll find out that especially in Warsaw nobody seems to know what brakes are for or shows any sign of friendliness towards pedestrians or cyclists who even risk their lifes when crossing the street in a marked pedestrian area.Another 'traffic problem' appears with the 'Tirowki' on overland streets. They are street prostitutes, mainly from Bulgaria, Romania or the former Soviet republics, whose clients are mainly truckers (TIR means truck). They seem to be everywhere, so watch out when a driver suddenly stops to ask for their service, he might make up his mind without much time left...

You may be surprised to read...

by Janina_B.

You may be surprised to read this:Among European states Poland is included in the countries with a relatively low CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL. During the course of a year the statistical Pole drinks around 8 litres of spirits. More high-alcohol content drinks are consumed in Holland, Italy, Germany, France, Ireland and Denmark. The biggest social danger is the constantly rising consumption of alcohol by teenagers. As regards the kinds of drinks, both Polish TEENAGERS and their counterparts from the countries of Western Europe prefer wine and beer, less often vodka. Young people from Malta, Denmark, Great Britain, Ireland, the Czech Republic and Ukraine consume the most vodka. World Health Organisation data indicate that only 7 percent of young Poles declared drinking vodka and other high-alcohol content drinks 3 times a week versus 28 percent of Danes, 27 percent of Englishmen and 22 percent...
