by seraphim

Don't expect Poles to speak English! German is slightly more useful: nearly everyone working in tourism speaks it at least a bit - this does not include people who work at bus-or trainstations! Even young people rarely speak English well, though a lot of them do speak it a little bit. A phrasebook is invaluable.

Be careful that when you get on public transportation, you eitehr have a ticket or can buy one on the tram. This is different in every Polish city, so it's best to ask. In Poznan I assumed you could pay the driver (because there was no ticket machine at the tram stop), but when I got on this appeared not to be true. I got fined 110 zl! And off course I couldn't defend myself because the controllers only knew Polish. When I arrived in Gdansk and had to take a tram to get to the campsite, I assumed you would have to buy tickets in advance there too, so I asked a guy (who wanted me to stay at a certain hostel, but I wasn't interested) and he pointed me in a direction where I didn't find any ticket office. I wandered around the station for over half an hour, but didn't find anything that was open (it was past 6pm). Finally I just asked at a random kiosk. A lady standing nearby who could...

If travelling by car : Use the first days to learn the local traffic rules. You'll find that they work and the only danger are people who don't follow them - like yourself if it's your first time driving in Poland. Biggest tip ?? Use your rearview mirrors - suddenly you'll find a small cinquecento ooozzing by trying to pass you before the big semi trailer coming up aead hits it.

Roads

Poland has a notoriously shoddy road system especially off the beaten path, although the worst I saw were in the neglected parts of Katowice. Also beware drink drivers.

Wild camping

Wild camping is forbidden in Poland (it wouldn't be even safe, anyway). So you can be fined if you spend a night in the forest, park or beach.

Rabies!

by arantha

Don't feed any foxes or squirrels in Poland (especially visiting wild areas) because lots of them have rabies!
