Karkonosze Mts.

Favorite thing: Karkonosze (a.k.a. the Giant Mountains) have been known and popular for many centuries. In the ancient times Celts came here to look for gold. In Middle Ages they were followed by Walloons who mined here for sapphire, jasper and crystal. In 16th century the region belonged to the most densely populated mountainous regions of Europe. In 19th century Karkonosze were flooded by tourists. The rich ones, too lazy to walk, were carried up in sedan chairs and greeted with cannon fire. Yes, the mountains have been too much exploited and you are bound to notice here and there the results of ecological disaster.
