The so called Bermuda Triangle district offers a dramatic contrast to the area around the beautifully restored Market Square. Most of the old houses in the Bermuda Triangle are run down, but have interesting facades with oriels, little statues or other nice details. When wandering around the streets you might feel as if you have stepped back into WWII times. Please note that the Bermuda Triangle district is not the safest area of Wroclaw, so watch yourself. Directions: The Bermuda Triangle district is situated in the area south of Traugutta street and east of Pulaskiego street. This area is located east of the Old Town (Stare Miasto). Leave a Comment

Kosciuszki Square by HORSCHECK One thing which always fascinated me on my trips to the Ex-Soviet bloc countries is the socialist realism architecture of the early post war period. Unfortunately, I couldn't find that many examples of this architectural style in Wroclaw, but at least the centrally located Kosciuszki Square is well worth seeing. It is a large square with wide boulevards and uniform granite buildings offering a bit of grey charm from Soviet times. The buildings around the square were constructed in the 60's. Directions: Kosciuszki Square is located about 1 km south of the Market Square (Rynek). Leave a Comment

Jewish cemetery by magor65 This Jewish cemetery was founded in 1856 and although its present condition is rather poor it's still worth visiting, because of its high historical value. There are about 12 thousand tombs and gravestones representing different styles. The inscriptions are mostly in Hebrew and German, but also in Russian, French, English and Polish. Here, in this cemetery, rest the remains of Edith Stein's parents and of many distinguished scientists, intellectuals, bankers, etc. The cemetery is in Slezna Street. Leave a Comment

Chopin by magor65 F. Chopin gave a concert in Wroclaw in November, 1830. He was then just 20 years old and his fame was still to come. To commemorate the event and pay homage to this great composer, a monument of Chopin was unveiled in Southern Park in Wroclaw on September 5th, 2004. The local authorities are planning to start here summer concerts, just as it was in pre-war Breslau. Before the monument was transported to it destination, Chopin was driven around Wroclaw and stopped for a while in a market square to exchange greetings with another artist, A. Fredro. The author of the monument placed the image of Virgin Mary with Holy Infant on Chopin's cloak. As he explained, Chopin was a religious man, although so influenced by George Sand that he didn't show his faith openly. The monument shows the great composer as a mature man, tired of life and the fight with disease. He is lost in thoughts or perhaps listening to music of his imagination. Leave a Comment

People's Hall by magor65 People's Hall is the biggest building in Wroclaw, where meetings, congresses, gatherings and various concerts, fairs and sports events can be held. It was built in 1913 on the occasion of great historical exhibition commemorating the centenary of battle of nations near Leipzig and victory over Napoleon, hence its original name Jahrhunderthalle. It's possible to arrange here a football pitch or circus arena. There are about 7000 seats inside. Leave a Comment

ancient cult sculpture by magor65 Sleza (718m) - a mountain in the Sudety Highlands is a popular weekend destination for inhabitants of Wroclaw. In the past Sleza used to be a place of mysterious pagan cult. What remained from those times are the ancient stone sculptures, for example this bear that can be spotted on top of the mountain. But today people come here to spend some time walking or cycling rather than solve the puzzles of the past. Leave a Comment

by evona Polanica Zdrój is a health-resort with very interesting architecture of hostels. The town is situated 420 metres above the sea level, in the region of Ziemia Klodzka. Mild climate and sources of mineral waters create the conditions good for: relax, curing illnesses of circulatory and alimentary canals and also helpful with giving up smoking. There you can see the Church of Assumption of Mary (1910). Leave a Comment

Szczytnicki Park by magor65 The biggest and oldest park in the city was founded in 1785 in the place of woods and bogs. It was gradually transformed into a park in English style. Today it's a favourite Sunday walking place for Wroclaw's inhabitants, especially in spring and summer when rhododendron groves and rose-gardens are at their best. Szczytnicki park is situated in the souther part of the city between People's Hall and Olimpic Stadium. Leave a Comment

Millennium Bridge by magor65 The latest addition to Wroclaw's skyline is Millennium Bridge - the biggest concrete bridge in Poland. It was open on October 29th, 2004. This is good news for those driving in the direction of Poznan as it will make the journey easier and shorter. The bridge looks impressive - the giant pylons support 150-metre long segment of the road over the Odra river. Leave a Comment
