The People's Hall (Hala Ludowa) was designed by the Modernist architect Max Berg and inaugurated in 1913 when the 100th anniversairy of Napoleon's defeat at Leipzig was celebrated. At that time the hall was known as Century Hall. Its cuploa has an inner diameter of 65 m and is 42 m high, so at the time of construction it was the largest building of its kind. Nowadays the 7000 seater hall is mainly used for exhibitions and all sorts of cultural events. Even the pope spoke here in 1997. Since 2006 the hall is on the UNESCO world heritage list. The grounds around the hall include a 96 m high metal needle which was a "gift from the Soviet people". Directions: The People's Hall is situated between the Szczytnicki Park and the Zoo on the right bank of the Odra river just east of the city centre. Several buses (#145, #146) and trams (#2, #4, #16) serve the area. Leave a Comment

Its 91 m tall belfry can be climbed for one of the best views over the city centre (entrance 5 Zloty, 2006). The original church tower was 128 m high and the tallest in the city, but it fell down in a storm in 1529. Directions: The St. Elisabeth Church is situated right in Wroclaw's touristy centre. The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (Katedra p.w. sw. Jana Chrzciciela) dominates the silouette of the Ostrow Tumski district. Construction of this double-spired Gothic building started in the middle of the 13th century and continued until the 16th century. About 70 % of the church were destroyed during WWII. The left belfry includes a lift to a magnificient viewing platform. Unfortunately the right tower was scaffolded when I visited Wroclaw in May 2006. Directions: The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist can be found at the eastern end of the Cathedral Street (Katedralna) in the Ostrow Tumski district. Leave a Comment

The construction of Wroclaw's Town Hall (Rathusz) began in 1290 and continued over the centuries. Luckily the Gothic and Renaissance structure was not much affected by WWII. An astronomical clock from 1580 can be found on its eastern ornamented facade. The 66 m tall tower of the City Hall is also the entrance to an interesting City Museum. Directions: The Town Hall dominates the Market Square (Rynek), therefore it can't be missed. Its exact location is at Sukiennice 14/15. Leave a Comment

Ostrow Tumski by magor65 Ostrow Tumski is the oldest part of Wroclaw and the seat of church authorities. It used to be an island until 19th century, when part of the Odra's bed was filled. After being destroyed in World War II it was rebuilt to become one of the most beautiful complexes of sacral architecture. In 1997 during the great flood that destroyed a big part of Wroclaw, Ostrow lived through very dramatic moments. Luckily, thanks to inhabitants who raised the embankments by two metres using the foil and sacks with sand, it was rescued. Leave a Comment
