    MANEKIN: Pancakes

by Kinia Updated Feb 3, 2006

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

MANEKIN is the local net of restaurants with pancakes. Pancakes made a big career in Torun. They are really good and cheap. There are three places in Torun:
    1. Rynek Staromiejski ( Main Squere ,by the post office)
    2. Wysoka St. 2
    3. Gagarina St. 152

Well I cant rememebr what they had on the menu ( I know I was eating something sweet). But i wanted to write about the place since it is the nicest places I have ever been to ( or at least one of the nicest). It is a very old, historical building. The interiors look amazing. It is a must to see it when in Torun.

Pod Arkadami Bar Mleczny: Like in the 80's

    Bar Mleczny in comedy

Bars Mleczny used to be very popular in Poland before 1989. They were the cheapest places to eat out. The government used to give subsidies to these places so that it was cheap. The whole Poland was eating there. Usually they had three kinds of soups and three main courses. There were a really funny places. There are not many left. If you happen to be in such place it feels like going 20 years back :)
These bars used to be Inseparable part of cummunism.

Talking of Bars Mleczny.. You can see such a bar in the movie MIS ( there is a picture from this movie on my Poland page). Its old Polish comady :-) very good one. Anyway there is a scene in bar Mleczny in this movie. And in this scene people are eating with the spoons linked with the chains to the table :-)You ask why? When we had communism it was hard to to get anything here (there were no spoons in shops)

So there is one such a bar in Torun. If you happen to be there there is one more thing you should know. Next to the bar is a litlle window where they sell waffles. Actually there are two windows but Im talking about the one closer to the bar. You must try their waffles. Mmmmm:-)

    Pod Kurantami: Polish food

by Kinia Updated Feb 3, 2006

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

There are plenty of restaurants in Torun. Most of them are cheap since thats the places where students eat. Some are more expensive - these are located in the most beautiful buildings in the city, often by the hotels.
My favourite restaurant is "Pod Kurantami". It is located at the Main Squere. The interior looks really nice. There are two floors in there. One floor is the restuarant and the other one is bar (very nice place!!!)

    Manekin: Another good one

by acemj Updated Oct 17, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I stopped in here for an afternoon coffee and a pastry, both of which were very good. Another VTer had his favorite apple strudel here and I have no trouble believing it. The menu has a lot of crepes and pancakes along with Polish specialties and based on my small sampling, it's a great place. Apparently, there are other locations, but this is the one on the main square over by the post office (the corner by St. Mary's).

    Soltysa: Best mushroom soup ever!

This place is great! The interior is not subtle with its furnishings blatantly trying to emulate a quaint peasant's cottage and a bygone era that speaks to the hungry tourist. But, forget about all that. Just buy into it and enjoy the meal!

Favorite Dish: I had the most delicious wild mushroom soup I've ever had, so this was a memorable meal for me. Like in most restaurants I visited in Poland, you'll be served copious quantities of bread accompanied by a whipped lard mixture (mmmm . . . clog those arteries). Be sure you don't fill up too much on bread, because the rest of the food is really good. I drank a fermented apple cider that was a bit sour, but good. For the main dish, I had a whole grilled trout served with vegetables and potatoes. Yum. All this for 31 zl (about $10).

Manekin - Market Square: Best apple strudle Ive ever had. period.

    latte at the Manekin

I was killing some time and came across this place. Its ambiance is kind of modelled after a typical 19th century American mid-western rail junction town. With the booths covered with the stage coach thing. I sat to have a coffe and ordered the apple struddle. 6 Zlt. It came as a great sized portion warm, with 2 scoop of vanilla ice cream, almonds and garnished with a suger floss that looked like tumbleweed. So good. I found out later that there are a total 3 Manekins in Torun. I actually went unknowinly to another one and had a very typical Torun dish on my fist night. They make a kind of large crepe/omelet and fill it with all sorts of different things, ranging from Tuna to ham/cheese to sweeter things like peaches. only 11 Zlt and it is eats like a meal.

    Restaurant-ships: Local custom

Along Filadelfia Boulevard stand a few ships that are moored there. On their boards are located bars and restaurants of very different styles - in some of them there are only hot-dogs, hamburgers and so, another you can even rent to organize the some special events like wedding or birthday party.

Fried livers (those from Torun) looks much better!

This moody place specializes in traditional Polish cuisine, although it is its only bid - you can also try many salads, vegetarian dishes or just drink a beer of coffee.

Ordering: seld-defence, but waitresses con delivered some food too.

    Cheaply!

Favorite Dish: I have tried fried livers - very tasty, although a bit fat.

Nice place on the town square, fine for dinner or just to sip a drink and talk away into the night with your friends.
