There is a tradition of baking special gingerbreads in Torun, called "pierniki" in Polish. It is said that piernikis have been produced since the town was founded.

Two shops where you can buy these cookies are:
Sklep Firmowy Katarzynka in ulica (=street) Zeglarska 25, or Sklep Kopernik at Rynek Staromiejski 6, (= Old Town Square) the Dwor Artusa building.
"Sklep" means "shop".

Don't you love flowers?

Right in the main square, there are plenty of flower vendors and during my stay in Torun, I noticed they were open virtually ALL the time. In this picture, I just couldn't help but noticing a long, smooth pair of stems . . .

What to buy: Pierniki – If you visit Torun you have to taste torunskie pierniki. Im Middle ages, when there was peste epidemy in Torun, nun Katarzyna from Torun had nothing to feed the people. The mice king Kocistrach, to thank for saving his life, showed her boxes with 50-year-old dough. She baked gingerbread (pierniki) called Katarzynki, out of it,. It was the old custom to give gingerbread as a gift for the royal families.
