In the South and East of Poland we drove but in the north we decided to use the train, so we took a train from Warsaw to Torun
The ticket cost 78 zl in first class and it took us two hours and a half.
It was a very comfortable and pleasant journey
At Torun station , take a bus and in ten minutes you cross the Vistula and leave you in the old part of town
From here we took the train to Malbork and Gdansk
You may have problems when you buy the tickets , as in the stations except in Warsaw , not many people speak English , but if you write the name of the stations in a paper and you show it in the ticket office you will not have any problem as the personnel is very helpful

Coming to Torun by train, you will most probably arrive in Torun Glówny, which is the main station. From there it is easy to get to town, just catch bus nr 22, 25 or 27, they all have end stop here. You buy tickets from a little kiosk outside the station. Just remember that you have to buy it before boarding the bus, because the drivers won't sell tickets at all, and there are plenty of ticket controls the day round.

Here I post two links to the site of the local transportation company with buses and trams. You will get two different kinds of maps, showing the lines. The red lines are the tram lines, the blue ones are bus lines.

Trains connect Torun with many Polish cities quite well, Gdansk is 3hrs 30 away, Warsaw 2hrs 30, for Krakow catch the night train. When you arrive at Torun station, you will not be in the centre, the station is south of the river and the exits are very confusing.

Torun has developed system of public transport. There are different kinds of it - busses, trams, taxi.
Much of buses are new and comfortable, Jelcz's, MAN's. On the bus stops maps with marked routes of the buses are put.
Tickets for bus and tram you can buy in newspaper kiosks.
There are also free buses, that go to shopping centres, on these buses no ticket needed..

To get to and from the main train station, just walk outside and buy a ticket for the bus at the little stand that says "RUCH" in yellow letters on a green background. Whenever you see this sign in Poland, it means you can buy public transportation tickets. Anyway, here in Torun, you'll want to get on either bus 22 or bus 27 and it will take your right across the bridge to the Old Town (get out at the first stop after you cross the bridge).

I took the train from Warsaw to Torun arriving here at the main station ("glowny" means "main") in around 2 hours 45 minutes. The ride in 2nd class was comfortable. Check out the second picture to see what the interior of the train cabin looked like. The station is about 2 km outside on the Old Town across the bridge on the other side of the Vistula River.
