Everything is made of wood

by matcrazy1

When you see the wooden cottage, old house travelling around Poland pay attention what is made of wood? The oldest houses are built exclusively from wood including their roofs and have no chimneys. Chimneys were added later. Before there was a central fireplace anf there was a central whole in a roof which could be opened and shut depends on weather outside and temperature/heating inside.

Polish grill

by matcrazy1

Inside restaurant usually you can find a grill made of brick as on my picture. Notice the thick wooden logs in this one located in the restaurant Devil's Grill (Czarci Ruszt). They use charcoal in grills. Easy to buy in supermarkets, gas/petrol stations and in many larger food stores.

Circulation of the heat

by matcrazy1

The heat produced in a fireplace was divided into two streams: frontward - directly heated the house and upwards which was transferred outside by a pipe in the hood of the fireplace to a chimney in a roof.Nowadays fireplaces are more effective and they create forced warm-air systems. First of all contemporary fireplaces have doors made of speciall high temperature resistant glass. The heat goes via the glass and goes up via system of main and branch ducts to warm-air outlets and to the chimney as well.

Heat from wood

by matcrazy1

The traditional Polish fireplace consists of the wood storage space at the bottom and the fireplace itself. They are made of special (high temperature resistant) bricks. Notice that there is no door and that the mantle is made of wooden logs. The heat from firing wood goes directly outside and upwards by the hood.

The entrance

by matcrazy1

The entrance to the old cottage has its additional triangle in shape steep roof which is supported by 4 thick wooden logs. You was able to wait for somebody coming back home outside the house with no umbrella in rainy weather :-). Btw when and by whom was umbrella invented?

Small windows

by matcrazy1

There are a few only and very small windows in traditional, old Polish cottages (wooden houses). Why? Winters are quite cold in Poland, at least from time to time. Hmm... there was no central heating systems in the past. There was a fire in the middle of a house or later a fire-place by a wall with a chimney on the roof.

Still cheap wood?

by matcrazy1

Look at my picture, please. The walls of this cottage are made of thick wooden logs. The steep roof is made of wood as well and - no doubt - it is the most expensive part of a cottage. I saw quite many wooden cottages under construction just now in Poland. Hmm... it seems that wood is still not so expensive in Poland. It may change very soon when Poland enters European Community, am I wrong? Maybe that's why some people build their wooden houses and/or businesses just now.

Windows and flowers

by matcrazy1

Usually there are a lot of flowers just outside the very small windows of the traditional wooden house. Windows are often two on one large wall: one by one.

Traditional fireplace

by matcrazy1

Inside the Devil's Grill Restaurant (East) you can find the traditional fireplace as on my picture. It was and still is the only heating system of the whole cottage.
