ziemia obiecana: Eating in the "promised land"

  • Ziemia Obiecana (promised land) refers to the name lodz had in 19th century as the boomtown of the textile industry and "cotton barons". The architecture reminds of the dining rooms in the fabricant palaces - but there is also an adjoining pub with a "proletarian-revolutionary" style, and the dishes remind of the old multiethnic mix of Lodz: There is Polish cooking as well as typical German, Russian or Jewish dishes

hard to pick, given the ethnic diversity! But I always like pierogy or zurek, a sour rye soup

The place is named after a popular, old polish movie.

    Try different items. Polish cusine.

Beautiful interiors designed by some local artists.

  • I'm using my friend's help on this subject. I haven't been to Lodz in a few years now. Many things changed. I asked him to recommend a few places to me. I'm going to Lodz this summer and I want to know the places that cannot be missed.
I trust his judgement so if you decide to go there I hope you like them too.

    'U Chochola'
An old-fashioned polish tavern. The place is decorated in a folk style. The waiters wear colorful, traditional folk costumes from the Podhale region (in the mountains).
Many items on the menu have original Podhale dialect spellings so it might get difficult trying to figure out what's what even if you know polish. But that's the whole fun of it!!!

  • My favorite feature of Hortex are the trees that were left growing inside of the cafe. The holes were cut out in the ceiling to accomodate the tree trunks. It's easy to spot this venue because you can see the trees growing out from the building when you're walking along Piotrkowska Street.

    all kind of desserts

  • This charming restaurant is situated in the Baluty district. It occupies a historic palace (small palace). I love the place for its unique atmosphere (they have a coat room).

You shouldn't miss the restaurant's elegant interiors.

This exclusive restaurant serves fine polish and other european cusine. It's still not too expensive looking at it from the western perspective (~35 zloty for an entree).
