Not far from Piotrkowska Street and its palaces it is not hard to trace back the industrial architecture that once changed the Lodz landscape. While there is some textile industry left, other buildings are empty now, or serve as museums or culture centres. While they lack splendor, their "industrial esthetics" is an interesting contrast against the luxurious dwellings of the "Lodz aristocracy"

  • Ul Piotrkowska is the lifeline of the city, stretching five kilometres. Walking along (or taking a rikshah for part of its length, at least in the tourist season during summer) will give you and impression of the multitude of people and cultures that once marked Lodz. You will find many of the main shops, restaurants and clubs either on Piotrkowska or in the streets bordering to it

The Historical Museum of Lodz is in the palace of the Poznanski family who were among the welathiest Jews inthe city.

The museum features exhibtions dedicated to famous Lodz's citizens - Artur Rubinstein (pianist) & Jerzy Kosinkis (writer).

The museum is open 10am - 2pm, except on Wednesdays when it is 2pm - 6pm and on Mondays when it is closed.

The Poznanski Palace and the Factory (constr. 1872-1902) is the place to start before walking down Piotrkowska str.

The fabulous orange-red factory building with its glittering windows is a very interesting city sight.

The neo-baroque Palace gives home to exhibitions and the interior is stunning.

Piotrkowska Str. seems to be the heart of the city, and this is especially true at night.

All the young people are walking and gathering for the night`s party places.

Lots of welcoming pubs, restaurants and clubs to dance and spend some money.

Or one can catch a rickshaw-ride, and enjoy the neon-night-life of Lodz leaning back like a King in a horse-carriage.

when you're walking in streets of walking, you'll notice some statues of famous people who were living in lodz. And of course, you can be invited sometimes at thier table and try to talk with them ( they are a bit shy...unfortunatelly... ;-p )
during winter, i was told that people put on their head warm clothes! :)))

Visit Kindermann's Villa - the ornate former residence of industrialist Leopold Rudolf Kindermann.
Built in 1903, a fine example of Art-Nouveau style architecture. The house features a large stained-glass window and now houses temporary art exhibitions.

Visit the Museum of the City (on the right in my photo) - it is housed in the splendour of the former mansion of the textile industrialist Poznanski. The building dates back to the end of the 19th century and its architecture is French Neo-Renaissance. Next to it is a typical textile mill.

As well as exhibits relating to the history of Lodz, the museum contains an exhibition dedicated to Arthur Rubinstein, the world-famous pianist who was born in the city.
