Media Markt

I stayed at the Ibis Hotel and when I was overtaken by events involving the ash cloud I needed access to the internet. I tried the hotel first and discovered they charged 14 PLN for 15 minutes. I wondered why the terminal was always free and now I knew the reason why - rip off prices. So next I tried the Silver Screen Cinema Complex, there, the charge was 4 PLN for 15 minutes, getting better but still expensive. Then I was told that Media Markt in Galeria Lódzka had internet access at a reasonable price. So off I went and checked, yes they had 4 terminals and it only cost 2 PLN for 60 minutes. Things were looking good but then I found out there was a problem with their system and an engineer had been called out. Back to the drawing board. I eventually tried later that day and things were working normally. You purchase a 2 PLN ticket at the check out and take it to the desk by the computer terminals and they will log you on. So if you want cheap internet access go to the Media Markt shop in Galeria Lódzka.

Intended mass graves left as a reminder
2 more images

There are a number of holes that have been left by a wall in the Jewish Cemetery. These were going to be the mass graves of the 800 people who were left behind when the Ghetto was cleared and its inhabitants sent to death camps. The 800 had to clean up the mess that had been left behind in the ghetto. The 800 must have been aware of their fate as some of their number had been forced to dig the mass graves. Fortunately the speed of the Soviet advance took the Nazis by surprise and those destined to die after the clean up survived. The intended graves have been left as a chilling reminder of this tragic period in history.

Poznaski Mausoleum

One of the interesting features of the Jewish Cemetery is the Poznañski Family Mausoleum which was erected between 1903-1905. Constructed in the style of a Greek Temple, it is made of grey granite and marble with Doric columns and it is reputed to be the largest Jewish Mausoleum in the world. There is a granite fence which surrounds the mausoleum. The whole mausoleum including the mosaic covering on the inside was restored in 1993. The plot covers an area the size of a small house.

Lodz Ghetto Memorial
4 more images

The Jewish Cemetery was founded in 1892 and replaced an earlier one. It is one of the largest in Europe with some 180,000 graves in 40 hectares of grounds. It contains the largest mausoleum in any Jewish Cemetery I have ever seen covering the area of a small house. It was for the factory owner Israel K Posnanski and his family, and his name will crop up in other tips. There is a memorial to commemorate the victims of the Lodz Ghetto. As you wander around, the graves may seem neglected but you can see that they were ornate at one time. This is in marked contrast to what is called Ghetto Field where the graves are plain or else just a simple marker. This area contains nearly 45,000 who died in the Ghetto during its existence. The cemetery can be entered by a small metal door via the dirt road Zmienna and it costs 4PLN.

The Manufaktura is not only a place to shop but also to admire the old building and unique atmosphere of the place. The Manufaktura project unites the past with the present, it connects the historical look with the modern design, creating a new image. Next to the old brick walls there is a façade made of glass, build as an entrance of the shopping mall. The interior has been designed in such a way as to remind about the history of Lodz, it brings together the modern design with an old industrial architecture.

Manufaktura is a place where not only the newest construction solutions appear, but it also uses latest technologies in areas such as energy supply to the cooling equipment, lightning, and management control systems. The air conditioning, light spots and access points are controlled by systems specially designed for these purposes.

Although the latest technological solutions appeared in this project, the original historical structure of the place has been preserved. The redevelopment did not change the façades, so the unique atmosphere of the place did not vanish. It is still a place where the time has stopped.

The palace - nowadays a museum - was once built by one of the leading manufacturers of the city, and seeing the splendor of the palace, it is evident that money was not a problem at all! The museum is full of exhibits tracing the history, people, culture and ups and downs of the city, find recreations of daily life from kitchen interiors to sections of streets. There are also a number of silverware and rooms dedicated to many of the city's former inhabitants, including the Łódź's unofficial Rubenstein museum (the only one in the world) remembering the legendary pianist.

Lodz Jewish Cemetary

Founded in 1892 to provide the final restin gplace for the steadily growing Jewish community. This is the largest Jewish cemetary in Europe; 40 hectacres. There are approximately 68,000 surviving tombstones, some of which are (apparently) very beautiful. I say "apparently" because between 5 adults we couldn't find it, despite it's apparent size & following the Lonely Planet's instructions. We asked for directions but either nobody knew what we were talking about or they couldn't understand a word we said! We did manage to get to a fair number of cemetaries in our hunt for this one... but gave up in the end!

If you do go you will need to cover your head to get in and there is a small fee.

It is open from 9am to 3pm except Sundays.

Visit the Museum of the City (on the right in my photo) - it is housed in the splendour of the former mansion of the textile industrialist Poznanski. The building dates back to the end of the 19th century and its architecture is French Neo-Renaissance. Next to it is a typical textile mill.

As well as exhibits relating to the history of Lodz, the museum contains an exhibition dedicated to Arthur Rubinstein, the world-famous pianist who was born in the city.
