lublin poçand by johnsakura A mish-mash of architectural styles lends this symbol of old Lublin a charm of its own: initially built in the 14th century, it was added to, and added to, and added to over the ensuing years. Brama Krakowska, XIV - XVIII w. Leave a Comment

lublin by johnsakura The Church of the Holy Trinity, also known as the Castle Chapel, is one of the most precious and important monuments of Mediaeval art both in Poland and in Europe. It is a place where the two cultural spheres of the East and the West have crossed and coexisted. In 1418, priceless Byzantine-Russian frescoes were painted in the Gothic temple. The earliest mention of the chapel dates back to 1326. The Gothic architecture of the church shows connections with the times of Casimir the Great (1333-1370). On King W³adys³aw Jagie³³o's instigation Russian painters, headed by Master Andrew, covered the interior walls of the temple with paintings according to an iconographic programme of Eastern Christianity. A foundation inscription preserved on the painted rainbow gives us the date of completion (10 August 1418) and the name of the chief master. The church served as the royal chapel. In the 16th c. the building was given a Renaissance portal and a front façade gable. The chapel witnessed many important historic events, including the Lublin Union of 1569. In later times the paintings were covered with plaster, and were accidentally discovered only in 1899 by Józef Smoliñski In 1903 work began to uncover and conserve the paintings. It lasted, intermittently, until 1997 and was the Polish conservers' success, considering the level of difficulties and the scale of the problems The importance of the Holy Trinity Chapel was appreciated in 1995 by the European Commission in Brussels, which granted the means to finance the last stage of the works within the programme for the protection of the European cultural heritage. The chapel is a great attraction both for connoisseurs and amateurs of relics of the past, as well as for visitors to Lublin Castle. Leave a Comment

Lublin : Krakowska Gate... by coceng Lublin is a lively city in the South-East of Poland. Lublin is situated in The Lublin Upland, which stretches from the East of The Vistula & San Rivers, up to the Ukrainian Border. The biggest city in this region would be Lublin ! The Krakowska Gate is one of the symbols of Old Lublin. It is located in the centre of the town & the best landmark. Its erection started in about the middle of the 14th century together with the surrounding walls. Now my photo was taken from OUTSIDE The Old Town ! The Museum of the History of Lublin is situated in the Gate. Everyday at noon, we can hear the bugle-call of the City of Lublin being played from the Gate. Its notation goes back to the 17th century... Leave a Comment
