Great Walk

This picture shows a view of the Castle facade from Brama Grodzka. From here only minutes separate you from entering the Castle. Take this short walk and enjoy the greens' view to the right.

In my humble opinion this picture may be treated as unique in a couple of years from now. The passage will be full of tourists soon!

Brama Grodzka

On your walk down Grodzka Street from Plac po Farze to the Castle you will have to pass this picturesque City Gate (in old Polish - Brama Grodzka). Presently the Gate hosts Theatre NN which promotes the rich history of the Lublin Jews.

In the old days Brama Grodzka separated the Old Town from the borough and the settlements lying at the foot of the nearby Castle.

Parish Church

I was astonished to see this square. It's name means 'After the Parish Church Square'. Actually all that was left of the parish church are some remains of its foundations. Impressive and encouraging to think a little about the past, the present and the future....

Dominican Church Facade

This gothic church was founded in 1342 by king Kazimierz Wielki (Casimir the Great) and then numerously refurnished. The main corpse of the church was surrounded by a ring of chapels founded by several imporant Polish families: Firlej and Tyszkiewicz among others.

As you can expect, the church hosts priceless pieces of art. One of themis a picture of Lublin fire that took place in 1719. It depics 18th century Lublin architecture.

I noticed that - similar to the rest of Lublin Old Town - the church desperately needs funds for restoration. It's sad to see such marvelous pieces of art fall into dust.

Pay special attention to those unique arhcitectural details a little above your head. Most of the buildings of Lublin Old Town are fantastically decorated. Unfortunately due to lack of funds most of the tasteful decorations are deteriorating. A huge loss of details...

Trinitarian Tower

The Trinitarian Tower is a great starting place for your trip of Lublin Old Town. It is a Neo-Gothic 135 feet tall bell tower, open for public, allowing for a great panoramic view of the town.

The tower hosts Archdiocesan Museum - also worth visiting for its rich and fascinating collection.

Cathedral

Both the Cathedral and the nearby Jesuit College were constructed between 1583 and 1605. They were later rebuilt in Baroque and Classicist style.

In the Cathedral you can see a 15th century bronze front, 17th century high altar made of black Lebanese pear tree, ten side altars, original wooden stalls as well as several precious paintings.

Cracow Gate - Back

This picture shows the Cracow Gate from its back. Looks better, doesn't it.

The Cracow Gate hosts the Historical Museum of Lublin. From its top floor you can admire a stunning panoramic view of Lublin Old Town.

Cracow Gate

The Cracow Gate is presently (August 2004) under restoration. That is why it is now covered with scaffoldings and commercial banners making it totally uninteresting. You should however see it when it's open for the public...

The Cracow Gate constitutes Lublin's architectural symbol. For centuries it used to serve as the Old Town main entrance. It was built in late 14th century in a Gothic style and then remodelled in 1782 by Dominic Merlini, an Italian Architect.
