Toilet sign by HORSCHECK It is customary in Poland that ladies toilets show a circle or the words "dla pan", whereas gents toilets show a triangle or the words "dla panow". This can be quite confusing when only the signs are shown on the toilet doors in a restaurant. Public toilets usually charge anything between 1 and 2 Zloty, so make sure you have some change available. Leave a Comment

Brisk business....... by leics I don't know if this is a local thing or a Polish thing or what, but the most delicious thing I tasted when I was in Krakow was 'osypcek z grilla'; osypcek is, I think, a smoked cheese and a piece of it was wrapped in partially cooked ?pastry (or maybe a pierogi?) and then grilled over charcoal. There were two stalls doing this in the craft market accompanying the folk festival whilst I was there, and it seemed very popular with everyone. I don't know if you can get this in cafes/restaurants but if you ever get chance to try it then do so; I wish I'd had more than I did! Leave a Comment

10 Zloty note by HORSCHECK Even though Poland joined the Euopean Union (EU) on the 1st of May 2004, they don't have the EURO as currency. Poland's currency is still the Zloty. 1 Zloty is worth 100 Grosz. You can get your money with your credit or debit card from ATM's or just by exchanging your local money at one of the bureaux de change. Leave a Comment

Rynek Glowny: New Years Eve by HORSCHECK Krakow seems to become one of the popular European cities to celebrate New Years Eve. The large medieval Market Square (Rynek Glowny) with its dimensions of 200 x 200 m is the perfect setting for a New Years Eve event. In 2004/05 a stage was set up just in front of the Cloth Hall. Many famous Polish artists performed here and about 170.000 people celebrated New Years Eve in and around the Market Square. Leave a Comment

Polish beer - Zywiec by HORSCHECK Poland is famous for a vodka-drinking tradition. Nevertheless, there are some popular Polish beers. One famous brewery is Zywiec which was founded in 1852 and nowadays owned by Heineken. Another well known beer brand is Okocim; an old-established brewery (founded 1845), which is now owned by Carlsberg. Both Zywiec and Okocim lager contain more than 5 % alcohol. Leave a Comment

by Skeptic-jr Nawojka was a half -legendary woman living in 15th century, the first female student of Krakow's Academy (now the Jagiellonian University) and the first female teacher in Poland. According to the rules from those days woman could not study at the higher level. So Nawojka was in the disguise of the 15 years old boy Jakub (Jacob). After three years of cheating and just before reaching the educational level prohibited for girls she was uncovered. The rector trial was a danger to sentence her for a death. She managed to save her life, because some professors gave her a recommendation as a great student. Then she went to the monastery. Nowojka today is a name for a student hostel at the Reymonta Street. It was a first dormitory for woman in Krakow. Leave a Comment

Lajkonik by Skeptic-jr One of unique Krakow's tradition is the procession of Lajkonik (there is probably no good English translation for this word, which consist of "konik" = little horse and "laj" from "laj, laj" - something like to scand "go! go!" popular within sport's fans). Colorful Lajkonik's march is organized every year, ten days before Corpus Christi feast. It starts at noon from Zwierzyniec district and ends at the Main Market Square in the evening. Near the Hall Tower Lajkonik is taking a tribute from city's mayor and then they both toast for Krakow's prosperity. Going on the route the Lajkonik hits with his mace passer-by, viewers and merchants "for happiness". They repay him with small contributions. Together with Lajkonik goes orchestra and a group of people dressed up for raftsman. According to the legend (historians say it is not true) the procession is connected to the foray of Tatars. A bloody shambles made by them on the Corpus Christi procession was stopped by intervention of troop of raftsmen. Their commander had killed one enemy, took his costume and entered the city in the glory saying that Krakow was free of danger. Leave a Comment

Planes, helicopters and more by Skeptic-jr In the last weekend of June there is an excellent air picnic in Krakow, the greatest event of that kind in the southern Poland. It is organized in the Czyzyny Airport, not so far from the center and Old Town. It is rather family meeting, with many attractions for adults and kids. The main point af agenda are shows in the air - jet shows, acrobatics, parachuting jumping, gliders and more. During shows you can listen to the lectures (in Polish) about aviation and aircraft in Poland and Krakow, see many machines and the ground or buy something from the stall on the fair (souvenirs and press connected to the aviation, but also clotches, parfums, toys for children...). There is also a draught beer for adults, but this year to buy it you had to stand in a long line. It is not bad idea to take something to sit, like a blanket, since shows are from the morning to evening, and everywhere around is only the grass. As I remember this year (2006), entrance fee was 8 zl (2 EUR) for all day - the whole picnic went on two days, but on Suturday and Sunday program was very similar. Leave a Comment

Obwarzanki's seller / obwarzanek by Skeptic-jr Obwarzanek (pl obwarzanki) is a bagel similar to pretzel but much more bigger. You can buy them usually at trolleys like on the photo (it from Internet, not caught by me) which stand almost at every corner in the center and in some bakeries as well. There are three most popular version: with salt (my favourite), sesame and poppy seeds. For me generally a bit dry but irreplaceable when you are hungry and have not enough time to eat something more substantial. Price (2004) - from 0,7 to 1 zloties apiece (~ 0,2 euro). Leave a Comment

by Pawtuxet I was enchanted with this primitive chandelier which hung in the gallery we visited in Kazimierz. They can also be found in the Cloth Market. There are places to put candles and each decorative piece is hand carved from wood and painted, simply but sweetly. At Cloth Market they are less expensive, but I was told they are not as well done as this one. At the gallery in Kazimierz, he will ship the piece out of country. They sell for approximately $350.00. Maybe on my next trip I'll bring one home. There will be a next trip, won't there? Leave a Comment
