 | Oswiecim Things To Do | Tips 51 - 60 of 232 | | In the Auschwitz I museum, there is a large chamber holding a countless number of spectacles. This really hits home with me, because I wear glasses. Without glasses, I could not see and would therefore be useless. Being useless would likely have earned me a trip the gas chamber had I been a prisoner here. The world would have been a blurry place in the final moments of my life as I was led down some steps with many others. Everything was taken from these people. First, they lost thier belongs. The next casualty was their humanity. Finally, they lost their lives. Leave a Comment Address: Auschwitz I complex

Since Birkenau was pretty much a makeshift facility for the purpose of extermination millions, the Nazis gave little concern for comfort for the prisoners who they chose not to eliminate immediately. The barrack quarters were quickly slapped together, little care was given to heating or the health of the prisoners. The prisoners stept together without matresses or blankets. Usually they used their shoes for pillows. This way they would not be stolen. Leave a Comment

At this site there is a map showing the various locations where victims and remains were found buried, left tortured in 'experimentation hospitals', left dying of starvation, etc. The invading Russians came here towards the end of WWII. Be sure to buy a small guide book, packed with maps & details of the scattered sites and buildings, statistics, what is in each bldg, etc. To get a sense of what happened, be sure to enter the building that has the windows shuttered off > this leads to an open courtyard shared with another building, where 'inmates' were shot by firing squads. That wall is riddled with bullet holes. Also, at this death camp you can see the personal effects of the victims, eg footwear, specs, even some scalps and hair! Really shocking & stomach-curling stuff! Leave a Comment Address: Oswiecim Museum (I)Directions: From Krakow train station, buy a ticket for a coach to this site (1.5 hours ride).

Birkenau barracs as I mentioned before, was barracs for keeping horses before. At the middle of barracs it is a long heating system and in right and left side from heating system - places for people. This barracs area is very big and with a wall around and security posts. Leave a Comment Address: Directions:

Here is the main entrance of Birkenau concentration camp - just a few kilometres from Auswitz. In this camp Jewish were imprisoned. Actually this camp wasnt camp before, but...barracs for horses keeping, later it was just a bit changed and made for "people keeping"... The railway road goes through entrance - they sent prisoners to camp by trains, actually mostly always full and scrapy. Leave a Comment Address: Directions: I guess it is about 2-3 kilometres from Auswitz.

The barracs of Auswitz start just entrancing the gates. Maybe barracs dont look so scary from outside, but scrary things happened inside of it. These barrcs were used to imprison people from different nations (actually Auswitz wasnt only concentration lager of Jewish, but of all other "suspicious" nations people. Birkenau, vice versa, was only used for imprisoning Jewish). Now it is different museums made in barracs. Mostly every barrac present different nation what was imprisoned here. The wall of concentration looks like other prison walls, just I wonder if this wall was electrificated or not. Anyway, I guess there was small possibility to run away, as there were posts of soldiers-guards who watched everything at the day and night. I only read in books that sometimes local people through not big and not so much saved wall tried to give some food for prisoners. Leave a Comment Address: Directions:

There are some stop signs around the walls of concentration camp - it is actually the most scary stop signs I ever seen, presenting the reality of this place. As I know, stop signs are written in two languages - German and Polish - HALT and STOJ. Leave a Comment Address: Directions:

This is the place for hanging people, and it was even to the only one way how to kill people in this place. A few steps from this place there was a gass cameras (they were devastated by Germans, when they runned away) and a stoves building - here people (dead or almost dead) were turned into ashes. What is more, from dead people they took away lot of valuable things - clothes, golden teeth and so on. Even women longer hairs were cut and were used for doing textile. This place is the main gates to death factory - Auswiitz. On the gates it is writen something in German - I guess it is "the work makes you free". As history shows, really work havent made them free, doesnt matter how much and what kind of work they did, mostly all were murdered or died later. Leave a Comment Address: Directions: The main gates
