Favorite thing: The main boulevard that cross the city from North to South and a lot of trams run to the Old Town... great sights as this famous building sought from everywhere
This is as well the main link among the upper and low town, besides its the street that you have to take to get to Nathans Villa hostel

    Sister

Favorite thing: This hated building is a common sight from many places in Warsaw. It is a huge building built by the Soviet Union to match the similar buildings in Moscow.

Fondest memory: People aren't supposed to like this building very much, as it reminds them of the Soviet occupation that they endured for so long.

Favorite thing: The Palace of Science & Culture.

This 42 story building is the tallest in Poland. Built by and originally named after Josef Stalin in 1955 as a gift to the city and used as Communist Party headquarters. Stalin wanted spires on all of his Russian skyscrapers to distinguish them from American ones, the spire here reaching 758 feet. Today it contains the country's stock market and many science and cultural institutions as the name implies. There is a visitors terrace on the 30th floor.

There is an old joke about it: 'Where is the best view in Warsaw? From the top of the Palace of Culture, the only place where you can't see it.'

Favorite thing: visit the Palace of Culture and Science. The Stalinesque skyscraper towering over the city centre (there are a few like this one in Moscow) is probably the most impressive piece of this kind of architecture from 1950th. I heard the story that in the early 90th, an American businessman wanted to purchase it and redevelop into a business center (removing the elaborate pinnacle and crenellated outbuildings). Guess what - Warsovians, after decades of mocking this symbol of Russian imperialism, grudgingly admitted a sentimental attachment to the Palace. In the end, the Palace is still here and from the 30th floor you can get a breathtaking view of the whole city.

    Warsaw without Palace?!

by piotrbog Updated Oct 24, 2006

Favorite thing: Unfortunately, there are some politicians who want to destroy the Palace - symbol of the city!!! So, if you have free time, go to Warsaw - it is maybe the last chance to see this marvellous building!

Fondest memory: I know that Warsaw isn't so beautiful as Cracow is. But what I like the most in Warsaw is its speed and a link between east and west. Eastern-soviet palace and huge new hotels around in the centre are the best example of it.

    Palace of culture

Favorite thing: Being in the very center of Warsaw, the palace makes a good navigation landmark.

You can also take a lift up to to the observation platform up there.
