Kabaty Forest, Warsaw

Just get to the metro train and go all the way to the very last station Kabaty. Getting out, pass Tesco mall and go straight. You'll easily get to the Kabaty Forest. Great place for walking, biking or just lying on the grass at the hidden glade between the trees.

The Kabaty Forest is delightful place to go for a walk, and an area missed by most travellers. There are well marked out, wide, straight footpaths, like a grid system, so it is easy to work out which way to go. I would recommend going there during the week as it becomes crowded at weekends. There are occasional seats and sheltered areas for an alfresco lunch. Get off the metro at the last stop at Kabaty and carry on walking in the same direction as the train, the forest is in the same direction. You should notice a large British named supermarket on your left, ideal to pick up a snack & a drink. Walk past the bus stops and at the rear of the supermarket is a path which is a shortcut towards the forest. By now you should see the forest ahead of you and the tarmac strip take you to one of the main footpaths.

Believe it or not, the Kabacki forest is part of Warsaw. More and more enclosed by the modern housing estates, it has been, however, changing for the worse. A few years ago you could still encounter wild animals there: deer, hares and you could hear frogs in the small pond. Now that the foresters have cut down a lot of trees, and, what is even worse, got rid of the shrubs, the animals have moved elsewhere, having nowhere to hide. Also, the crowds of people, trampling the forest at weekends have contributed to its gradual degradation. Yet, it still remains an oasis of peace on week days and a cyclists' paradise.

Living in a big city has many advantages, but the disadvantage is that you live far away from the nature. So every little part of green place is very welcomed. Kabaty forest is one of the favourite spots for Varsovians because it's not so far away from the city center and it's easy to get there.

Las Kabacki is placed in the south part of Warsaw. You can get there by underground, taking off on the last station called Kabaty. It's a beautiful place for long walks, biking or just sitting and enjoying nature.

There is a monument in memory of people who died in an airplane crash in Kabaty forest in May 1987. There are always some flowers and candles.

Children love this place because they can feel free there. But Kabaty forest is a preserve so only walking through marked paths is allowed. Also don't try to pick up the mashrooms there.
