Gdansk's touristy Old Town has been beautifully restored after the massive destruction of WWII. Nevertheless, Gdansk still has some areas which give you an insight into how Gdansk looked before the war. One of these areas is the hilly Biskupia Gorka district with its cobblestone streets and old buildings in decay. You even find some German inscriptions on the buildings. I have heard that Biskupia Gorka is among the most dangerous areas in Poland, just keep that in mind when wandering around. Directions: The Biskupia Gorka district is situated on a hill just southeast of the city centre. Leave a Comment

Sopot is part of the Tri-City and situated about 12 km north of Gdansk. It is a popular seaside resort with about 40.000 inhabitants. Sopot is well known for the longest wooden pier at the Baltic Sea (length 515.5 m). Many trendy cafes, pubs, restaurants and shops are located in and around the main tourist artery Bohaterow Monte Cassino. Sopot can be reached within 25 minutes from Gdansk. Take one of the northbound commuter trains which leave Gdansk train station almost every 10 mins. Leave a Comment

Stogi Beach by HORSCHECK If you have plenty of time you shouldn't miss a visit to Stogi beach on a sunny day. It is a beautiful sandy beach with dunes and a pine forest. Besides it is said to be the cleanest beach of the Tri-City. Stogi is located northeast of the city centre and can be reached with trams No. 8 (Stogi Plaza) and No. 13 (Stogi Pasani). Leave a Comment

One of arcade houses. by Dagon Many houses like that were built on Zulawy Wislane. This kind of buildings was quite popular in nearby villages. These were houses of richer landlords. Becouse Zulawy were and are very fertile, so landlords had money. Many of arcade houses has survived. Some you can find on Trakt Sw. Wojciech (Road of St. Wojciech). There also houses like that in nearby villages - for example in Koszwaly (place near to road Gdansk - Warsaw), Milocin, Trutnowy (this one is kept in the best condition), Osice and Krzywe Kolo. There is also a tourist route "Of arcade houses" - of course for people intrested in walking, or riding a bike - black marks, starts in Koszwaly, ends in Krzywe Kolo. The best way of getting to that points is using buses. The whole route has got 20 kilometers. I'm not sure, if the name is proper, but you can see how does it look like on the photo. Leave a Comment

An old church in Oliwa. by Dagon Oliwa was built and owned by monks. On the beggining there was only a monastery. They created willage in this place. After some time it started to grow. People living nearby came and settled here. Also rich people from Gdansk noticed nice place on the north of their city. They also started to build their beautiful houses. To our times survived not many of them, but still some streets have got its charm. You can find there also some other historical buoldings, like for example this church presented on the photo. Very close to these buildings is big forest, where people can rest while for example walking. Leave a Comment

The Hel peninsula is a 35 km long small strip of land which protects Gdansk Bay from the sea. There are a few seaside resorts situated on the peninsula, of which Hel is probably the best known, as it is located at the eastern end of the peninsula. Hel has a big fishing habour, some beaches, two churches, a lighthouse and a Fokarium with up to 6 seals. In summer Hel can be reached by ferry from Gdansk; during the rest of the year you should catch a bus or train in Gdynia. The trip by bus or train takes about 2 hours, whereas the ferrytrip is much quicker. Leave a Comment

One of the palaces on Jaskowa Dolina street :))) by Dagon Wrzeszcz is one of the biggest parts of Gdansk. It has many new settlements, but the most of the buildings are very old, but unfortunattly many of them are not in best condition. Wrzeszcz was quite important place in history. Many citizents of Gdansk (which in that time was only in borders of today old town) had in Wrzeszcz their estates, where they could rest from city noise. After some time it began to grow, and now is a part of the whole city. The most of buildings are tenement houses. Lots of them don't have it's old beauty, but streets like Sobotki, Matejki and other in this patr are really good looking. There is also old martial church, which also can be interesting. On the second side of main street - Grunwaldzka, you can see many historical, tenement houses, but many of them should be renovated. That are for example Wajdeloty, Aldony, Lelewela streets. On this last one - Lelewela street - is also house, where Guinther Grass was born. Close to this parts is Jaskowa Dolina street. It was really beautiful place in history. Only very rich people from Gdansk could live there. There were many villas, which belonged to them. Now many of them are restored, but not all. The rest is waiting... Leave a Comment

There are still many monolithic Soviet-era apartment blocks from communist times in the suburbs of Gdansk. At present these fomer grey looking apartment blocks are painted in all kinds of colours to make them look nicer. I had a look at some of these apartment blocks in the Nowy Port district of Gdansk. Nowy Port is located north of the city centre and can be reached with trams 4, 10, 14 and 15. Leave a Comment

Guthenberd monument (early spring :) by Dagon If you want just to walk and rest Guthenberg Grove is very good place. It's quite big forest devoted to the inventor of printing machine - Guthenberg. In the middle you can find arbour with Guthenberg monument inside. Also in this forest you can find a Forrest Theater, wchich is a kind of theater on open air. Plays are not too often played there, but you can find something, sometimes... There are also some concerts played. You can get there for example from Jaskowa Dolina street, where you will find some kind of gate guiding inside. Leave a Comment

Evening Sky and church spires in Stare Miasto by Ekaterinburg The Glowne Miasto in Gdansk is so stunning that some visitors, especially those with limited time tend to stay strictly within its boundries. There's much more to Gdansk than Dluga, Dlugi Targ and The Long Embankment. I did not see a fraction of what I wanted to see - you'd need at least a week to do Gdank justice- but I really enjoyed my forays into the area outside the very centre. The atmosphere is quite different and shows another side of Gdansk than just the picturesque. The streets around the train station, the Great Mill and St Katherine's Church are full of character. Heavy red brick and a sometimes rather sombre look - this was actually what I expected Gdansk to look like despite having seen numerous pictures of the centre. This red bricked architecture is very reminiscent of some of the industrial cities of Northern UK and parts of Gdansk reminded me of Manchester. There are numerous street markets around here and people sitting in communal gardens outside their apartments. The objects of desire for me in all these markets were the giant sunflower heads being sold, presumably, for their seeds. I will never be able to appreciate seeds bought in a bag again. Other Contact: Just outside the Glowne Miasto
