In the communist era milk bars (Bar Mleczny) provided working class people with subsidised food. The tradition of these places seems to continue as you still find milk bars in most Polish towns.
One of these is the Bar Mleczny Neptun. All available meals can be seen at the counter. You only need to point to your favourite dish and pay at the cashier. The prices are still subsidised and unbeatably low.
As the milk bars usually close in the early evening, they are only an option for lunch or early dinner. I'm not sure if you would call The Sphinx an Egyptian restaurant but they certainly did a good job with the decor. When I got to Warsaw I discovered many more Sphinxes and the penny dropped that this was a franchise but my initial encounter with Sphinx in Dlugi Targ in Gdansk left me feeling I'd come upon something quite exotic. The decor was very 'Rock-the-Kasbah-ish' with dimmed lights, wispy decorative hangings and loads of colour and jewelled finishes on furniture and accessories.
My favourite dish in Sphinx was the Beef Shoarma. This came in average or large portions and was accompanied by generous servings of salad. Basically it's a very highly seasoned beef dish, served in strips with a sort of naan bread to acompany it. The grated carrot and cool cucumber type salads were a refreshingly cool contrast to the HOT meat. One of the tastiest meals I've had anywhere in quite some time. Pierogarnia U Dzika is a Polish restaurant which specialises in Pierogi. Pierogi are traditional Polish filled dumplings. The restaurant also serves other Polish dishes including chicken, tasty soups and of course fresh fish.

Barracuda is one of the newer restaurants in Gdansk's Old Town. It focuses on Polish cusine, mainly fish dishes. The tiled restaurant is equipped with a stone-clad bar. This is just one of a variety of cafes which could suit you if you are looking for a drink, ice cream, or pastry to give you an afternoon boost. This little cafe had evidentally been an old drug store and had lots of interesting shelving and detailing on its interiors. We popped in for a quick treat to carry us over til dinner. As soon as I stepped off the train I spotted Kentucky Fried Chicken and McDonald's. Seems that the Americans have brought their poor eating habits to Poland. Strikes me funny, actually to see the logos in just about every city and country I visit. I suppose some people find it comforting to know they can eat the same thing no matter where they go.
