I am, or better to say, I should be on a low calory diet. I mean that, in fact, I skip any diet while I am happy on the way here or there, that is quite often recently. My trip to Gdansk was not an exception. Thus I had to propose an ice-cream for my wife (read: a half for me) as soon as I had seen a line for ice-creams in front of the Pellowski Cafe. And it was a very good choice. The Pellowski company runs a few bakeries and patisseries in Gdansk. Their cakes and bread are said to be the best in town and are very popular. Thus, be prepared for waiting in a line.
Ice-cream of your favourite taste, necessarily topped with chocalate shavings. Yummy! By the way, Polish milk chocolate with huzelnuts by Wedel company (Whole Nut by Cadbury Poland now) is the best I have ever eaten. It's a well known delicasy available only in Poland now but soon all over Europe, I am sure. Shriver Belgians! Hmm... you never know what you eat in the European Union now :-(. You may buy "Belgian" chocolate or "Czech" beer ("German" beer soon) produced in Poland. Keep in mind that these products are marked with a very small writing: "Made in Europe" :-) Leave a Comment Theme: Ice CreamPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Ul. RESTAURANT UDER THE SALMON (POD LOSOSIEM) by matcrazy1, 4 more photos I was told that "Pod Lososiem" (Under the Salmon) is the best restaurant in Gdansk. And the food I tasted there, indeed, was the best. The stylish interiors decorated with old paintings and other items, dressed up waitors and an aroma of old good times make this place a bit stiff and snobish although luckily most costumers look like casual visitors, not like queens and kings. You don't have to dress up unless you join any official banquet in this restaurant. Anyway, I hardly decided to behave and not to dance with my camera around the table. Our waiter was very kind, well-trained and knew a lot about served meals. The service was maybe a bit too slow. We had to wait some 10 min. for first drinks. Old Polish cuisine rules in the menu. Add various European meals and selection of good wines. Let me say that next time I will choose "Gdanski rosól z wegorza (Gdansk salmon soup) and "kaczka pieczona z musem jablkowym i gozdzikami" (roasted duck with apple mousse and cloves). The restaurant is expensive as for Poland but not the most expensive in Gdansk. Expect to pay 10 - 25 zl per bowl of soup and 40 - 90 zl per main course (€1 = 4 zl).
Urszula had "Losos Gdanski z szyjkami rakowymi" (Gdansk salmon with the crayfish necks). I had "Talerz pierogów polskich" (dish of Polish dumplings). Both meals were not small, as usual in fancy restaurants, but very large. They tasted great, just top quality: the best salmon I ever had and one of the best "pierogi" as well. Their cook has to be a real artist. Bravo! Leave a Comment

This is a perfect place for a short break and relax during busy sightseeing, a nice place to meet friends as well. The interior consists of the two colorful, pretty designed and decorated interiors. There are tables, a comfortable sofa and a lot of shelves with old, used books you can read if you know Polish language. Add tables under umbrellas in front of the cafe. The staff is very nice and can perfectly communicate with incoming costumers. They offer cafe, soft drings, many kinds of tea (the most popular drink in Polish homes, always served hot and with a slice of lemon), chocolate (hot and frozen), home made cakes and ice creams. All is available in average or even low prices (as for Gdansk old town).
I had cafe latte (6.00 zl) and excellent "sernik na cieplo z sosem wisniowym" (hot cheesecake with morello = cherry topping; 6.50 zl). Then I ordered the tea secretly called "czerwonokrzew z trawa cytrynowa" (red-bush with lemon grass; 6.50 zl) which tasted great and unique. Urszula had a shake called smoothies (fruits + crushed ice + milk; 7.00 zl). She liked it more than me. Then she tasted wonderful "szrlotka na cieplo z bita smietana i galka lodow waniliowych" (hot apple pie with whipped cream and vanila ice cream; 6.00 zl). €1 = 4 zl US$1 = 3.3 zl. Both hot (baked) cheesecake and apple pie is popular home-made dessert in Poland. And Akademia Cafe is perfect place to try them both. Open daily 10.00 am - 9.00 pm. Good appetite :-). I passed by this restaurant named probably Rybki (little fish) just before reaching the Baltic beach in Jelitkowo. On the way back my nose couldn't afford the aroma of fried fish. Although I wasn't hungry I simply had to try local fish, as usual being at the seaside. The menu was exclusively in Polish language. The service and prices were average, the design casual. Nothing special there but fried fish and watching people passing by. Portions were large enough. Each fish is fried (smazony/a) and served exclusively with chips and mixed salad. Add smoked trout (pstrag wedzony) served with lemon and bread for only 10 zl. Let me list the fried fish served (Polish name and price in Polish currency zl; 1 euro = 4 zl): - trout (pstrag 22) - salmon (losos 22) - (ryba maslana 22) - sole (sola 24) - (panga 24) - (merlin 25) - (Mahi-mahi 28) - (kargulena 22).
I had my favourite halibut (the same name in Polish; 24 zl) whereas Urszula ordered large Baltic flatfish (flounder; fladra in Polish; 15 zl). Both fish have tasted good but I liked halibut more. Chips were OK, like chips, but the mixed salad was not good (maybe not fresh). Leave a Comment Theme: SeafoodPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Ul. by Raimix As I think almost at every place in Poland, food portions at bars, coffees are big and affordable talking about prices. The specifics of Gdansk’s and its surrounding (Pomeranian region, region near Polish seaside) food is fish soups, more food consisting fish. Leave a Comment

I usually skip fancy restaurants, especially when I travel abroad, for at least three reasons: small meals, high - often unjusty - prices and embarrasing atmosphere, too calm for my soul. And sometimes a tie is required I never wear being on a holiday. But, in Gdansk, Urszula and I had a special occasion. We celebrated next anniversary of our marriage. That's why after a walk around pretty renovated and amazing 17th century country manor we ended up in Dwor Oliwski restaurant. The portions were not small, prices were much lower than in any fancy restaurant in, say, Germany, France or the USA. But, the atmpsphere was, indeed, too "aristocratic" to take pictures of meals without being confused. The 2-floor building with an attic under a red-tiled, gabled roof stands alone at the entrance to the property. In the beginning I didn't figure out that there is a restaurant inside. There is only a modest, small sign by the entrance door. Well, the top quality does not need any advertisement, right? We were seated by a large, round table in the first room to the right. The light interiors with large windows and doors follow the wealthy style of the 17th century country manor. There are at least three, a bit different, large rooms on the two restaurant floors. Our waiter was fast and perfect, maybe a bit too serious :-). He knew everything about the food and drinks served. He asked us about some details of what we wanted to order. It's still not common in Polish restaurants where a waiter rarely ask any questions to a consumer. There were some French and English speaking consumers next tables and they were served in their languages.
The menu contains both French, Italian and Polish meals. We had first class, as usual in Poland, Polish Zurek (16 zl) and silky cream of yellow chanterelle mushroom (18 zl). Then we ordered Italian tagliatelli (18 zl) and ravioli with spinach (22 zl) which tasted great, almost as well as those unforgettable pastas we had in Valeggio sul Mincio, Italy, during the Euro VT-meeting. We ended up with two delicious deserts: tiramisu and hot chocolate Moelleux cake in coffee sauce and vanilla ice cream. Yummy... and they had to liven me up, so that I took pictures of them. We paid (add wine, cofee, water and a tip) 150 zl (€1 = 4 zl) - not that bad as for so fancy place, right? Asia is Hungry!! by Bushman23 Everything about this restaurant hails back to the communist era, from the service method (cafeteria style), to the furniture (wooden chairs and tables), and the prices ($5 for a 2-course meal, with a drink). it's a great experience, and the food is actually great, all homemade, though half the stuff is unavailable if you're too late...
Started with soup (Zurek again) and followed it with some meat cutlets and mashed potatoes. Asia had a chicken schnitzel-looking thing, which was very, very tasty. Chlopskie Jadlo was our second favorite restaurant in Gdansk for traditional Polish quisine. For starters, it was nice to finally receive bread (and a tall stack of enormous slices of it at that) without having to ask for it. Rather than ordering piecemeal off the menu, our group opted for two gigantic plates of various kinds of meat. It ended up being twice as much food as we really needed, but it was delicous and easily filled our bellies. My tour book described it as "the quintessential Polish chain restaurant," and apparently there are also locations in other Polish cities. However, it did not have the look or feel of a chain restaurant, so don't let that deter you. Prices were just a tad higher than average, but not by much. It is still a very good value compared to restaurants in the US and western Europe. Leave a Comment
