I was told that "Pod Lososiem" (Under the Salmon) is the best restaurant in Gdansk. And the food I tasted there, indeed, was the best. The stylish interiors decorated with old paintings and other items, dressed up waitors and an aroma of old good times make this place a bit stiff and snobish although luckily most costumers look like casual visitors, not like queens and kings. You don't have to dress up unless you join any official banquet in this restaurant. Anyway, I hardly decided to behave and not to dance with my camera around the table.
Our waiter was very kind, well-trained and knew a lot about served meals. The service was maybe a bit too slow. We had to wait some 10 min. for first drinks.
Old Polish cuisine rules in the menu. Add various European meals and selection of good wines. Let me say that next time I will choose "Gdanski rosól z wegorza (Gdansk salmon soup) and "kaczka pieczona z musem jablkowym i gozdzikami" (roasted duck with apple mousse and cloves).
The restaurant is expensive as for Poland but not the most expensive in Gdansk. Expect to pay 10 - 25 zl per bowl of soup and 40 - 90 zl per main course (€1 = 4 zl).
Favorite Dish: Urszula had "Losos Gdanski z szyjkami rakowymi" (Gdansk salmon with the crayfish necks).
I had "Talerz pierogów polskich" (dish of Polish dumplings).
Both meals were not small, as usual in fancy restaurants, but very large. They tasted great, just top quality: the best salmon I ever had and one of the best "pierogi" as well. Their cook has to be a real artist. Bravo!

This is a restaurant mostly for... working people. It is placed on the XVI floor of the office building (one of the famous in Gdansk called Zieleniak). The food they serve is like at home mostly Polish, but you can also get some specialties from the other parts of the word.
The price level is from 8 to 15 PLN for a single dinner dish. They serve also beer and some alcohol.
The decoration is nice (fish nets, shells) and it get changed from time to time. The first room is typical for eating, only tables and chairs, the second is more for relaxing with sofas and coffee tables.
The strongest point is the view, you can see the whole northern part of the 3-cities (also famous Gdansk shipyard and the 3 crosses monument at the front of the main gate of the shipyard), together with a part of the Baltic sea - especially when there is good weather (sometimes it is possible to sea a bit of the city Hel - placed at the end of peninsula! check map ;-))) ). I really like to go there and rest for a while when having a break.
Just remember, the building itself is old, was built in 70ties, so don't expect luxury. By the way, people say that it was build in a very special way, from the top to the bottom !!! You should see some more information about it ! ;-)))
If you want to get to the restaurant, simply go to the building, get in a lift (on the left or right site from the entry) and press floor XVI, some of the lifts go only to the XVth floor then you have to walk up -stairs. On the northern side of the XVIth floor you will see the door to the restaurant.
Just remember that during the work week they are open 9:00 - 18:00 and on Saturday they officially are closed but... when a customer is there, they told me, that they will serve her/him. Unfortunatelly, I don't know for how long, probably not longer then 3 p.m., you may try ;-)))).
They have menu written also in English !!!
Favorite Dish: There are several good dishes, I eat there very often because I work in the building :-)))). Anyway... you can eat e.g. a breakfast:
1. Eggs on butter (hot chocolate, 2 toasts) - 6 PLN
2. Eggs on bacon or ham (hot chocolate, 2 toasts) - 8 PLN
3. Boiled sausages (hot chocolate, 2 toasts, ketchup, mustard) - 8 PLN
4. Fried sausages with cheese (hot chocolate, 2 toasts, ketchup, mustard) -6 PLN.
Soups:
1.Old traditional zurek soup with white sausage - 4 PLN
2. Borsch soup with boiled meat-balls 4 PLN
3. Tripe soup - 5 PLN
Also a dish with pork, chicken & turkey or fish and also vegetarian food, e.g.:
1. Grilled pickled pork, salad, chips - 12 PLN
2. Grilled chicken breast with sweet chilli, salad, chips - 13 PLN
3. Trout with baked apples, salad, chips - 15 PLN
4. Salmon on spinach, salad, chips - 15 PLN
5. Young potatoes, eggs, vegetables, soya chops, clotted milk - 13 PLN.
You can get there also Ice cream with fruits 7 PLN, Home baked cake 3 PLN...

It may be small and tucked away in a non-touristy area but "U Babuni" is, without a shadow of a doubt, the number 1 place in Gdansk for traditional Polish cuisine & I really can't recommend it enough.
A great menu, a quaint homely atmosphere and the friendliest waitresses ever make it a real insider's tip.
Favorite Dish: I often go for the "Devolaille", something like a Chicken Kiev, or the deep-fried Camembert but its all good and I can honestly say that, whatever you pluck for, you won't be disappointed.

Gosia and I are real pros at finding wonderful cafes for lunch or coffee. Here we had a view of the street with all its retail and tourists providing us with continuous "people watching" entertainment. However, I was distracted by the little dog being fed scraps by his mistress at a nearby table. It made me homesick for my precious companion waiting for me at home.

After long walk in old part and was slowly moving near Mariacki Cathedral and have met KUS bar. The place was full of local people, so that why I wanted to try it – looked like popular bar to fill my stomach with something delicious.
Actually my choose was right – it is place with huge portions of food, still quite normal prices (about 3-4 euros for good portion).

As I think almost at every place in Poland, food portions at bars, coffees are big and affordable talking about prices. The specifics of Gdansk’s and its surrounding (Pomeranian region, region near Polish seaside) food is fish soups, more food consisting fish.

Everything about this restaurant hails back to the communist era, from the service method (cafeteria style), to the furniture (wooden chairs and tables), and the prices ($5 for a 2-course meal, with a drink). it's a great experience, and the food is actually great, all homemade, though half the stuff is unavailable if you're too late...
Favorite Dish: Started with soup (Zurek again) and followed it with some meat cutlets and mashed potatoes. Asia had a chicken schnitzel-looking thing, which was very, very tasty.

Well, we'll start with the ambience i guess... Nice low lighting (with optional lamps next to the tables so you can read the menu :p), excellent choice of music (most of it was 80's kinda stuff), very comfy seating, and excellent decor, all relevent to the name - Elephants!
The service was also great - we were left alone for the most part, but when required, our waitress was always at hand :) Not to mention that we only got to the restaurant at 11ish... though it was busier when we left after midnight than when we arrived! Which leads to my next point... There's a bar area as well.
Favorite Dish: I had the Pork Ribs... absolutely awesome! mostly meat, very tender, very tasty :) Asia had a traditional Polish soup (Zurek?) served in a roll. For dessert i had a pancake with nuts, berries and chocolate - OMG!! Asia had Apple pie, which was almost as good :p

Sphinx is a good Polish restaurant chain. One of Gdansk Sphinx's situated on Dlugi Targ square is also pretty nice one. Interesting interior, atmospheare and very kind service.
In summer time there are also dining tables on open air.
Dishes are very tasty. Sphinx offer different meat dishes, salads, deserts, pastas, pizzas....
You can visit Sphinx restaurants in different Polish cities but also in other Central European countries.
