ul. Mariacka with display cases of Amber by Ekaterinburg Earlier this year I had read a book called 'The Amber Trail'. It described the origins of Amber in the Baltic and described one woman's marathon bicycle trip from the Baltic Sea to the Mediteranean following the ancient trade routes. I learned how amber is formed and is harvested on windswept Baltic beaches and indeed of the penalties imposed on local people who tried to come by some amber for their own financial gain. Glowing descriptions of the amber rooms at Malbork Castle really inflamed my passion for this stone and I determined that I was going to harvest my own little gem when I came to Poland. In Gdansk, the problem is where to buy rather than what to buy. In the centre of town you could not move two paces without bumping into an amber shop and after a while the selection became bewildering.
After browsing through every amber display case in ul. Mariacka and suffering from the usual crippling inability to make my mind up, I finally purchased in one of the shops on the Long Embankment. At that stage it was almost in desperation BUT I finally chose a ring that Iliked and went home well pleased with myself. It's a beautiful ring 'sreberna i burstynova' (amber and silver if my memory is correct, or even partially correct) but later that evening when I tried it on, it just slid straight off myfinger. Obviously my hands were swollen in the extreme heat and I had bought the wrong size. Four months later I have still not brought it to a jewellers shop to be altered but Iwill do it before Christmas and then it will be an extra present to myself.
You can spend a vast amount on the really large items but I paid EUR50 for a ring that would probably cost at least EUR100 here. Theme: JewelryAddress: The Long EmbankmentDirections: Alongside the river, near the Green Gate.

by Pawtuxet I really enjoyed taking this photo. You should enlarge it to see my humor. The blonde woman is dilligently cleaning her display case and staying busy as she hopes for business, while the couple in the next booth couldn't care any less if anyone ever came by to purchase their amber. ha ha ha ...sunny days can do that to you. The amber is up to the brim and overflowing all over Gdansk. There are so many versions of necklaces and earrings, it is impossible to look at all of them. The quality of the "street" jewelry is of course not terribly good. It's OK, but if you want to find some really well designed amber jewelry, step into one of the shops with the better grade of craftsmanship. You are sure to find the color, size and shape you are looking for. Prices are still about 1/3 less than you would spend outside the country. Leave a Comment Theme: Jewelry

Don't go to the first one in the street :-) Take my advice and go to the one of better hairdressers in the 3-cities. This one is a specialist and have best students in the profession. What more... they speak English so you will not feel lost :-).
You can do with your hair whatever you wish. They are proffesionalist and use good products. They also will help you to choose something good for yourself :-) Remember to call before you come! The best hours are aroung noon. They work from 10 to 19:00, but in the afternoon there are a lot of people :-D. *** If you found the tip useful, please RATE it. It took time to collect the data and publish it here for you to use it :-). ***

by Pawtuxet We were surprised and delighted to find this woman amongst all the amber jewelry along the cobblestoned street. Her handiwork is quilting, which is not at all popular in Poland. It's more of an American craft. However she is making interesting lingerie bags, quilts, handbags and other items...selling them in specialty shops all over the country. Her designs were original and her colors interestingly combined. I found a few items for gifts here and we enjoyed a long discussion of quilting in the process. Leave a Comment Theme: Local Craft

by zaffaran A nice shop offering not silver and amber (what is very common in the Old Town of Gdansk) but clothes -and of course mainly sweaters- made of wool. They are handmade, very colourful and of very interesting design. So you may predict that all the sweaters are different and the chance that you meet other person wearing YOUR sweater is very small.
It depends on the stuff. Leave a Comment Theme: Women's ClothesAddress: Swietego Ducha 87/89Directions: Not far from Mariacki church

STREET STALLS AT 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SOLIDARIT by matcrazy1 I was in Gdansk in August 2005 that was at 25th anniversary of Solidarity movement. Each August there are many cultural events about it. There are street stalls put on main walking streets and close to Solidarity Square. They sell historical books on Solidarity, gifts with Solidarity logo (flags, cups, T-shirts, lighters etc.) and CDs with songs on the Solidarity.
I've bought a cup and a lighter with Solidarity logo and a few CDs which were not available at my hometown.
20 - 35 zl per CD (€ 5 - 9). Leave a Comment Theme: BooksAddress: Waly Piastowskie Street, GdanskDirections: I've seen the street stalls at the Solidarity Square, a bit southwards at Waly Piastowskie street and at the main pedestrian street called Dluga.

Madison shopping mall (Galeria Handlowa Madison) is the only shopping mall located in downtown Gdansk (parking lot: the first 2 hours free ) open Mon - Sat 9.00 am - 9.00 pm and on Sun 10.00 am - 2.00 pm. It contains many shops on 4 floors and a food court on the ground floor. I liked its modern, a bit artistic, design and good air-condition (in many other Polish supermarkets and shopping malls their owners save on aircondition in summer).
From a visitor's point of view it's a good place for doing budget shopping: postcards, travelbooks, maps, small gifts, camera equipment (batteries, memory cards etc.), food and eventually (it takes much time) clothes of various Polish and well known European and world companies at both high and low prices.
Many cloth shops are expensive as for Poland but they offer good quality clothes! Many of them offer good deals as well (look for dicounts). Leave a Comment Theme: Department StoreAddress: ul. LOCAL MARKET AT PANSKA STREET, GDANSK by matcrazy1 This busy local market offers fruits, flowers and clothes. I am a bit surprised it still exists at this place, in downtown Gdansk. Hmm... it's rather a place to see and watch locals than to shop. The clothes are mostly cheap, neither fashionable nor of good quality. Keep in mind that, despite fast development, Poland is still a country of many poor people forced to save on basic needs, too. Although poverty is not well seen in downtown Gdansk.
Nothing or... fresh fruits, flowers if you need any.
Cheap. For example light dress for 10 zl (€ 2.5, US$3). Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: Panska Street; 80-850 GdanskDirections: At northern part of the Main Town (15 min. walk from the Main Railway Station - Gdansk Glowny), walk Podmlynska Street southwards, continue Panska street, pass by the Jacek Tower (on left), the market on the left behind the corner of the Market Hall.

I have seen a few street stalls which sold books on main walking street of the Old Town (Dluga Street) and at the Solidarity Square. The Rosner and co. publishing company sold CDs and books on Solidarity movement.
I've bought a book on Solidarity Movement on street stalls run by "Rosner i Wspolnicy" (Rosner and co.) publishing company at the Solidarity Square. The book titled "Who let journalists in here? 25 years later" (Kto tu wpuscil dziennikarzy? 25 lat pozniej) contains 45 unpublished till now reportages of journalists who where let in the Gdansk shipyard during strike in August 1980 - the reports were recording on tapes during the strike. It's fascinating to see how much the journalists were first surprized, then amazed when they saw the space of freedom in the shipyard that time. Most of them underline that they left Gdansk as different people, these 2-3 weeks changed their minds forever. There is a lot of text to read on 397 pages but many black and white pictures, too. The book is sold together with a CD "Polish August - radio reportage of Janina Jankowska" (Polski Sierpien - reportaz radiowy Janiny Jankowskiej) - this fascinating and enthusiastic reportage was broadcasted on 28th August 1981 at 10.00 pm by first programme of Polish radio (uncensored that time) and won Prix Italia in 1981. Both the book and CD is sold only in Polish language version, and the next bad news: the publishing company internet shop does NOT ship the book abroad :-(.

This relatively small bookstore (ksiegarnia in Polish), located a bit off the beaten path in the Old Town, offers great variety of books mainly in Polish language.
From visitor's point of view: maps of Gdansk, travelbooks on Gdansk and various vocabularies (incl. English- and German-Polish).
Approx. €2-3 per map and 2-3 times more for a travelbook. Pocket English-Polish vocabulary cost approx. €4. Leave a Comment Theme: BooksAddress: Ul.
