Royal Road is an official name for the whole way between Upland Gate and Green Gate. It was road, which was used by kings to get into city :) - citizents were greeting them here.

The Royal Road starts at Upland Gate - After this gate (there, where now is very big street) was a city moat.

Then is place, where was city prison and the house of torturer. Here were prisoners kept and here took from them picecs of information. Now this building is under renowation, but later there will be Gdansk Amber Museum.

The next stop should be Golden Gate - beautiful gate, on which top are 8 figures. these 4 on the outside are showing atribiutes of the city - glory, wealth, freedom and peace. On the second side - inside the city - atributes of citizents - piety, justice, harmony, and prudence.

Than we can see Lond Street, which ends on Main City town hall. While walking the Long Street, watch on the tenement houses, this was the representative road of Gdansk - here were living the richest.. There is also Uphagen Tenement which now is a museum. You can watch, how people lived in Gdansk (of course, rich ones :)

Than we've got Long Market. Here are some of the most representative buildings of Gdansk. Here is Artus Mansion, A Golden Tenement, Neptun Fountain. Here were also living some kings and other very important people coming to Gdansk.

The Royal Road finishes on Green Gate, which now is a big gallery.

The biggest church made of brick in the World...

The biggest church made of brick in the Europe is St. Marys' church in Gdansk. It's really huge.
It is 105 meters long, and 41 to 66 meters wide. The roof is 28 meters above the floor. The tower has got 82 meters (there is very good view for the city).
The tower would be bigger, but during building this church, the city was under Teutonic Knights reign. They builded castle in Gdansk and didn't want any building beeing higher, that their castle towers. This castle was completly destroyed after the moment, when Gdansk came back to Poland.

There are many important pieces of art. For example:
    - main altar from XVI century
    - astronomy clock from XV century
    - many smaller altars on the walls

With St. Mary church are connected many legends and if somebody is intrested in them, just write to me. I'll try to write some of them.

St. Mary's Church is said to be the largest brick church in the world. Its Gothic interior has a capacity of up to 25.000 people and it is home to an enormous astronomical clock (1464). The history of the church dates back to the 14th century, but as with most other buildings of the city centre it was severely damaged in WWII.
I highly recommend climbing the more than 400 steps up to the top of the 78 m tall tower. The effort will be rewarded with breathtaking views over Gdansk.

    Neptune Fountain

This fountain is certainly a focal point in Dlugi Targ even though it is not in the centre of the area. This is because it was not just a fountain but also a well, one of several along this route. Because of it's dominant position however this was the one that was most decorated and became the most popular. The statue on top is of the god of the seas, Neptune, always a revered figure in this maritime city. Around the water basin of the sculpture are other sea creatures with Polish eages on the wrought iron surrounds. Water of any sort seems to act as a magnet and this fountain is always surrounde by people. We enjoyed standing next to it and happily took each other's photos like good little tourists.
Behind the Neptune Fountain, the white building with green windows is Artus Court, formerly a sort of Chamber of Commerce for the merchants of Gdansk, and now a museum. Again, this building is an eclectic mix'em-gather'em of stylistic elements. The large gothic windows are impressive .

Crossing the Raduna canal you get into the Old Town, much less reconstructed zone, which has both old and modern buildings. Surely less fascinating than the Main Town, it is surely more "real".
You can find there the Great Mill (Wielki Mlyn), which is the biggest medieval mill in Europe, and was originally built in the mid 14th century. Now it holds a commercial centre inside.
Other important buildings in this part of the town are the Old Town Hall as well as St.Bridget's Church, the stronghold of Solidarność movement during communist era.

The Crane is probably Gdansk's most famous landmark. It was completed in 1444, but seriously damaged during WWII and restored between 1955 and 1962.

It used to be the largest crane of its kind in the world. The Crane served to handle heavy goods and to erect masts on ships. It was operated by men walking inside the huge wooden wheels.

Nowadays the Crane is part of the Central Maritime Museum.

    Directions:
The Crane is located on the bank of the river Motlawa; just in the heart of the touristy city centre of Gdansk.

It is the heart of the historic Hanseatic Gdańsk, the medieval port town with a dedalus of narrow streets just back of the waterfront.
There are 2 canals in Gdańsk, Raduna and Motłava, and along this second one you can see some of the most picturesque building of the town, and also its most famous landmark, the "Żuraw Gdański", i.e. the huge wooden crane, the biggest in medieval Europe.
But in the Main Town you will also find Gdańsk most beautiful and famous street, the Ulica Długa and the Długi Targ, the main square with the town hall

Biggest and oldest Gdansk performance. History of fair reaches st. Dominica XIII century. On the last Saturday of July for Gdansk pulled off the numerous German crowd, French, English, even Spanish and Portuguese tradesmen. It curled for harbor over 400 ships with French and Spanish wine, silk, jams, Portuguese spicy seasonings, tin and English material. The circus actor from all the world, acrobats, magicians and theatrical corpses where not missing either.

Today the fair is highlight for tourists and also for inhabitants, it connects the business fair with rich program of cultural performance and sports. Calendar of event includes wide fan of gala, concerts and competitions.

The city is possessed for 3 weeks by three indivisibly: Neptune, Hermes and Muses of Apollo. There are a lot of mercantile stalls and theatrical corpse in the streets. Can be heard old marine music and gypsy romance, old Gdansk music and charming old instruments. The smell of overseas sweets is implicated with local bread. Everyone will dig out nice reminder into an artist stall or on valuable old things trade. Swing of Gdansk fair is compared with so loud European performances as Munich Oktoberfest or Hamburg Weinachtsmarkt. Cheerful, culturally and tasty.
    You are welcome :-)

This is the main pedestrian street in town, closed by 2 huge stone gateways at the 2 ends, the Green Gate at the western side and the Golden Gate (Brama Złota) at the eastern end.
Every house here is worth a deep looking at, they are all beautiful and perfectly restored.
Close to the western end the street gets wider becoming the big square Długi Targ, where the town hall of the 14th century (rebuilt after WWII) is really impressive

The monument is surrounded by several memorials and plaques which are dedicated to the victims of the street protests.

    Directions:
