In December 1970 protests against worsening living stan- dards led the workers from the Lenin Shipyard to go on strike. The government send troops to stop the strikers but it all ended up in bloody clashes leaving 45 workers shot to death by fellow-countrymen. This monument was erected to the memory of the strikes in 1970. It was inaugurated on December 16, 1980. The steel monument is 42 metres high. The plaque with names sits on the spot where Lech Walesa climbed the wall during the strikes in August 1980 to join the strikers inside. The word LAT in my third picture means YEARS OF AGE. Some of the killed men were pretty young.... St Mary's church in Gdansk is the largest brick church of the world with St Mary's in Torun as the world's number two. St Mary's in Gdansk is 105,5 metres long, the nave 66 metres wide and the tower 76,6 metres high. It is said to be able to host 25.000 people inside the church. St Mary's is a triple-aisled hall church with a triple-aisled transept. It was built in stages from 1343 to 1502, but some sources mention there has been a wooden church on the spot as early as in 1243. The church was severly damaged during World War II, but fourtunately most of the valuable decorations had been removed in anticipation of the worst and are now back in place, allthough some are still missing, not having come back from their "exil". The church is open from 09.00 to 17.30 Mon - Sat, 13.00 to 17.30 Sundays. Please see my other tips for info about the sights inside the church. I've tried to follow a route from the entrance, along the left side around the church and back again on the right side. by Askla Next to the Chaplain's Chapel (Kaplica Kaplanska) you find the famous sculpture called Anna Three-in-one. It was carved of limestone in 1477. The name of the sculpture points to the three figures mixed together, Anna stan- ding, holding her daughter Mary in her left hand, while Mary in turn is holding her son. Leave a Comment

In the corner to the right of the main altar you find St Ja- kob's Chapel and altar. The altar was made between 1430 and -35. The three wodden figures inside the altar are St Jakob, dressed like a pilrim; Mary with child to the left, and Mary Magda- lene to the right. The wall paintings were created in the begin- ning of the 15th century. On pic #3 you can see St Jakob dressed in a hat with a shell. That was typical in the Middle Ages as a sign by which pilgrimes were recognized. Pic #4 shows the dead coming up from their graves. There are also three relic boxes in the chapel, like the one in the last picture. Leave a Comment

In Jadwiga's Chapel we find Jadwiga's Altar. It was made in Gdansk 1435 - 40. When an alarm system was installed in the chapel in 1988, some unknown wall paintings were uncovered. They had been whitewashed during the Reforma- tion but are very clear in colour. As you can see from pic #5, there is a fence before the chapel which makes it a little bit complicated to take good photoes. The objec- tive must be thread through the holes in the fence which hampers the photoing ability a bit.... Leave a Comment

Over the entrance in the sacristy is an inscription reading: "In the year of our lord 1343 on Wednesday after the Laetare Sunday, the ground stone for the city walls was laid, and on the next Friday, the first stone for the church was laid in honor of Mary." Leave a Comment

The gothic wooden figure is known as Anna-three-in-one. It was carved at the end of the 15th century. Beneath the figure there is a predella from 1480 - 90. The three scenes from Mary's life shows the annunci- ation, the meeting of Mary and Elizabeth, and Mary praying over the child in the last scene. Leave a Comment
