 | Gdansk Things To Do | Tips 161 - 170 of 511 | | This little baroque beauty can be overlooked as it stands to the side of the gigantic St. Mary's Basilica (you can see it in the picture's background). It was founded by king Jan III Sobieski in the 17th century who had it built for Polish Catholics in Gdansk, as their own St. Mary's Basilica was taken over by German protestants at that time. It's a pity the interior does not match the beauty of the exterior... I'll be keeping an eye on this one, hoping to see some changes inside :-) By the way, take a look also at the tenement houses in Grobla I St. just in front of the Royal Chapel (click for the other photos to this tip). When you're done with St. Mary's Basilica, walk up Piwna St. till you reach the Great Armoury. It's stunning facade and ornamentation are Gdansk's best example of the Renaissance architecture. I was glad to see it rennovated, with the gold leafed elements shining in the sun. It was built at the very beginning of the 17th century (1600-09) right on the mediaeval city walls. It now houses the Academy of Fine Arts and a small shopping mall. On the other side of the Armoury you will see the Wyzynna (Upland) Gate which was one of the most important entries into Gdansk towards the end of the 16th century. The Gothic Crane is only a part of the Maritime Museum. If you're interested in primitive boats from all over the world, check the Colonial Warehouses next to the Crane, which is also a part of the Museum. Other exhibitions are the old Soldek ship and the Granaries on the other side of the river. There is a ferry boat to take you to the other side and the crossing is included in the ticket price. The Soldek was the first ship built in the Gdansk shipyard after WWII. The Granaries house the main exposition about the history of Polish seafaring around the globe (including Jozef Konrad Korzeniowski, the writer known as Joseph Conrad), as well as some exhibits from Swedish military ships dating back to the Polish-Swedish War of the 17th century. Hmm, I visited the Maritime Museum when I was a teeneager. Perhaps it's time I refreshed my memory... Open 10:00-6:00 in summer (up to 4:00 outside summer), closed on Mondays. A pass to all museum buildings is at 14 zloty ($4.50). If you want only the Soldek and the Granaries, this will be at 6 zloty ($2). The Renaissance Green Gate (late 16th c.) is a magnificent four-arched gatehouse that was built as a palace for noblemen and royalties who visited Gdansk. You walk through the gate when exiting Dlugi Targ into the Dlugie Pobrzeze wharf. Now the Gate is a division of the National Museum which houses various temporary exhibitions. It's always worthwhile checking what's on, perhaps it'll be of interest to you. The arcade has good acoustics so you often see street musicians playing there, some of them are good classical musicians! And if you're lucky, you may spot Lech Walesa who has his current office there. Leave a Comment Address: In Dlugi Targ

Another famous landmark in Gdansk and most often photographed symbol of the city. It seems like a structure out of this world when you pass by it or under it... Built in mid 15th century, it was the largest port handling equipment in the workd, used for handling heavy goods from boats (up to 5 tons) as well as installing masts on ships. Its complicated mechanism was operated by human muscles! You can see the mechanism and tour the interiors of the crane. Admission is at 2 zloty ($2). The Crane is a part of the Maritime Museum so you can also buy a 14 zloty ($4.50) carnet ticket that entitles you to see all of the Maritime Museum across the river. Check out the statue (and fountain) of Neptune in Dlugi Targ, just off the Town Hall. This early 17th century's bronze beauty is a symbol of Gdansk, probably the most often photographed landmark in the city. Be sure to go around it to check all the details enclosed within the ornamented fence (click for some more pictures). During WWII this symbol of Gdansk was dismantled and hidden together with a few other Gdansk treasures. It was brought back to its original place only in 1954 after this part of Gdansk was reconstructed from the severe war damage. Leave a Comment

This is an absolute must in Gdansk! Dlugi Targ (the Long Market) is an oblong square that looks like a closed off extention of Dluga St. (Long st), and it takes you to the wharf along the Motlawa river. It is the location of the most beautiful tenement houses that were owned by rich Gdansk families. They were destroyed in WWII and were then reconstructed. You'll also find some nice restaurants and cafes, amber jewellery shops, the Town Hall with the City Museum and, of course, the Statue of Neptune which is a fountain and a symbol of Gdansk. This combination makes Dlugi Targ a very vibrant place in the warm season, a bit like the Market Square in Krakow. Cafes and restaurants have their tables outside, and the jewellery shops take their stands into the square as well to lure you into buying their amber & silver merchandise. Also street performers and musicians come here to entertain you! This is also one of the main locations of St. Dominic's Fair, the largest open-air commercial and cultural event in Poland. Check my Local Custom tip about it. Leave a Comment Directions: Right in the middle of Glowne Miasto (Main City), a part of the Old Town. It is about 10-15 minutes' walk from the railway station to get there.

The Dlugie Pobrzeze (Long Wharf) is a pleasant pedestrian-only walkway along the Motlawa river. This is where the famous Gothic Crane is and the Maritime Museum across the river. The wharf is a vibrant place, with lots of cafes and restaurants, a few hotels, and many gift shops and amber jewellery stores. I like to walk there and have lunch or coffee, enjoying the breeze there. It is always crowded with tourists, except for in winter. This is also where the tourist boats harbour is located, if you intend to take a boat trip to Sopot, Hel or Westerplatte. Leave a Comment Address: Dlugie PobrzezeDirections: Enter from Dlugi Targ through the Zielona Brama (Green) gate or through the Mariacka Gate from Mariacka St.

You won't miss this Town Hall if you walk in Dluga St. and Dlugi Targ which are the main tourist areas. This town hall was built at the end of the 14th century and hosted many Polish kings who often visited Gdansk. Some of its most beautiful interiors are the Great Council Chamber (the Red Room), the audience's White Room and the Treasury. You can also climb the narrow 80m high tower if you like panoramic views of the places you visit. The Town Hall was almost completely destroyed during WWII but was rebuilt meticulously. It now houses the Gdansk City Historical Museum, open 10:00-4:00 (from 11:00 on Sundays). Admission is at 8 zloty ($2.50). You may ask for a 12 zloty ticket that also entitles you to visit the Arthur Court and the Uphagen House.
