The best way to get to suburbs like Oliwa or to the neigbouring cities like Sopot or Gdynia is by the commuter trains of SKM which are also known as kolejka. The SKM station can be found just next to the Main Train Station (Gdansk Glowny). Tickets can be bought at SKM or RUCH kiosks and have to be validated in the yellow stamp machines before boarding the train. Fares depend on the distance of the trip. A single trip to Oliwa or Sopot costs 2,80 Zloty and a single trip to Gdynia costs 4,00 Zloty (2005). Leave a Comment

The public transportation of Gdansk consists of trams and buses. The 10 tram lines cover an area in and around the city centre. Tickets are sold at many kiosks, especially RUCH kiosks. They are valid for both trams and buses. The ticket price depends on the length of the trip: 10 min (1,40 Zloty), 30 min (2,80 Zloty) and 60 min (4,20 Zloty). A 24 h ticket sets you back 9,10 Zloty (2005). A stripe of 3 x 1,40 Zloty tickets is available from the driver. You have to validate your ticket on board of the tram. Leave a Comment

Gdansk's well developed public transportation system consists of trams and buses. About 70 day and 10 night lines serve Gdansk's bus network. For information about the tickets please read my "Explore Gdansk by tram" tip. Just note, that tickets for night buses (marked with an N) are more expensive than regular tickets. Two important bus lines are: Line 106 which serves Westerplatte and Line B which serves the Airport. Leave a Comment

I flew to Gdansk from Dortmund with the Hungarian Airline Wizzair. Gdansk's Airport is one of the few places in the world which is named after a living person: Lech Walesa. The airport is situated about 10 km west of the city centre. The cheapest options to get to town are the local buses No. B (to the city centre) and No. 110 (to the train station Wrzeszcz). A single ticket for the bus is 4.20 Zloty (2005) and a trip to the city centre takes about 35 minutes. Leave a Comment

The Main Train Station of Gdansk (Gdansk Glowny) is located just a stone's throw away from the Old Town. Trains leave to Malbork, Torun, Poznan, Warsaw, Krakow or Gdynia from where you can catch trains to the Hel peninsula. Next to the main train station the commuter train station can be found. For more information about the commuter trains (kolejka), please read my "Exploring the Tri-City by commuter train" tip. Leave a Comment

Flying high with LOT by Ekaterinburg If you are travelling to Gdansk from Warsaw you should really give some serious thought to how you are going to do it. Because there are only direct flights to Warsaw from Cork I had to make the journey both ways to and from Gdansk. The morning we arrived we flew to Gdansk an hour later. At the time I thought this was an extravagence but with hindsight I would now regard it as common sense. Because I booked ahead with LOT we got a very good price - less than EUR50 each. The flight took about an hour and we arrived in Gdansk, refreshed and ready for action. On our return to Warsaw I insisted on taking the train to see more of the countryside. First class on the train is cheaper than flying but I found it a complete waste of time. We spent more than 5 hot sticky hours on the train and the countryside was a major disappointment. It seemed to me that there was absolutely nothing but wheatfields and the occasional stand of trees, the whole way between Gdansk and Warsaw. Just outside Gdansk we saw two girls working on a vegetable patch in skimpy bikinis, which my husband enjoyed, but other than that the landscape was really boring.

Our train ride to Gdansk was actually quite comfortable. I love watching the countryside slide past the windows. The landscape changing from little villages to woodlands and then simple little farms. There is a man who comes by with a cart filled with snacks and such if you need a little something. We also had a lunch in the dining car on our way back. I don't find them so terrible as I might have expected. It's quite simple, but all in all satisfying. It makes for a lazy day of snoozing, reading, eating, drinking....passing the time away. The train could have been faster, but the times they slowed or stopped gave an opportunity to observe the simple things of daily life outside the window. Leave a Comment Theme: Train

Gdańsk Głown by Carletto76 The very beautiful main train station (Gdańsk Głowny) is at about 15 minutes of walk from the Main Town attractions, and even closer to the Old Town. There are tons of trains which connect Gdańsk to the other 2 nearby towns Sopot and Gdynia (all together they form the so called "3-town"). There are also daily trains from Warszawa and Krakow. The international ticket office (Kasa Miedzynarodowa) is upstairs, where you can buy tickets to Vilnius, Kaliningrad and other nearby foreign cities. Leave a Comment

BERGMANN TRAM WAGON (1927) by matcrazy1 I didn't use city trams during my last visit to Gdansk but I did it in the past. Well, there is no need to use trams if you are going to limit your visit to downtown. The tram network connects downtown with far suburbs. For a visitor the most valuable is connection to Oliwa district (tram No 6, 12, 15) and to the beaches of the Baltic Sea in Jelitkowo (2, 6, 8). Most trams start to go after 4.00 am and end around midnight. There are few night lines (more buses that time). Tickets are available in numerous kiosks/newstands and cost: - 1.40 zl (up to 10 min.) - 2.40 zl (up to 30 min.) - 4.20 zl (up to 60 min.) - 9.10 zl (up to 24 hours) - 98.00 - no ticket :-) You are obliged to validate your ticket immediatelly after entering tram wagon. BY BERGMANN TRAM WAGON (1927) Since 2004 you can use special tourist tram line run by original tram wagon Bergmann produced in Gdansk (Danzig) in 1927 (electric trams replaced horse ones in 1896). The line is called Gdanska Linia Turystyczna and marked GLT-1. It works exclusively in summer (from the last weekend of June to the last one in August) and exclusively on Saturday, Sunday and on national holiday = 15 August. It cost 4 zl (2 zl for children up to 16yo). GLT-1 goes from the downtown (stops by Brama Wyzynna and Main Railway Station) to Oliwa and back. Leave a Comment

GDANSK GLOWNY (MAIN RAILWAY STATION) by matcrazy1 Once I got to Gdansk by train from Krakow, once by bus. My recommendation is to get to Gdansk from other cities in Poland (or from Kaliningrad, Russia) by train or more exactly by express train Eurocity or Intercity to Gdansk Glowny (main railway station) located at the edge of historical downtown. Poland is not that large country to travel by plane: it costs even a few times more (add taxi from an airport) and you can't save much time on air transportation if you add transfer to downtown from airport and at least 1 hour waiting time before each departure (airport security). APPROX. DURATION AND COST OF TRAIN JORNEY TO GDANSK time in hours; cost of intercity train tickets in 1st (2nd) class in zl, reservation fee included (2005; 1€ = 4 zl, 1US$ = 3 zl): Krakow - 7; 131 (93) Warsaw - 4; 72 (49) Wroclaw - 7 Poznan - 4 Torun - 3 Kaliningrad (Russia) - 6 TIMETABLES AND RESERVATIONS Look for up-to-date information and timetables of intercity trains (good quality express trains with compulsory reservation) in Poland at PKP Intercity. Usually you can buy a ticket just before departure at Gdansk Glowny railway station but sometimes trains are fully booked. It may happen especially on Friday and Sunday afternoon/evening, on or close to some holidays (1-3 May, 15 August, 31 August) and events (large concerts etc.) in summer, at these days better make reservation in the morning or a day before if possible. Now (summer 2005) PKP intercity offers reservations by phone but... not in Gdansk. There is internet reservation of tickets for domestic trains only but... it does not always work. The PKP announced to fix it soon (when?) and make the service better (when?). Check their webpage for details and... be patient... we, tax payers in Poland, pay a lot for PKP company each year and can't wait it to become top quality company. Leave a Comment
