ZKM Public transport tickets by HORSCHECK Make sure that you always have a validated ticket when using public transportation (buses, trams, suburban trains) in Gdansk. Ticket inspections are carried out quite often and especially when you don't expect them. I once faced a ticket inspection in a tram. The three ticket inspectors were dressed very casual. Of course I had a validated ticket available. If you don't have a ticket you will be fined 98 Zloty (25 Euro, 2005). Leave a Comment

Downtown Gdansk, especially the Main Town and the Old Town look very pretty. But driving to Gdansk I passed by many ugly suburbs around. There are industrial and dirty zones like Gdansk shipyard or the Northern Port (on the way to Westerplatte). Add ugly architecture of many residential districts full of ugly, huge, rectangular appartment houses, each with hundreds small flats typical for Soviet bloc countries. At least more and more of these houses are painted recently. There is one high and ugly office building at the edge of the downtown, too. But this one is at least hidden behind huge advertisements (on my picture). My warning: do not judge Gdansk looking at its ugly suburbs, do skip them and concentrate on the best of Gdansk: old downtown, Oliwa and others green and pretty districts. Leave a Comment

There is one thing I have to tell you. The crime in Poland is not that low as we wish it could be. Anyway if you are careful nothing will happen. In the worst situation are tourists. Especially when leaving expensive hotels. The "Bad" people can wait just behind the corner for attacking you and taking away your money. Just use taxi when leaving an expensive hotel, don't walk alone in the dark, empty streets, always take only a bit of money and a credit card, the documents leave in the hotel. Watch out where you hide you wallet and how you carry your bag. I am really sorry of that fact but I understand that a lot of people in Poland are unemployed right now, have no money but ... have dreams of owning expensive staff and having a reach life. *** If you found the tip useful, please RATE it. It took time to collect the data and publish it here for you to use it :-). *** Leave a Comment Phone: 997 -Police

CLOSED CHURCH OF ST. JOSEPH by matcrazy1 There are at least a few old churches worth seeing in Gdansk. Unfortunately I found three of them closed. Usually their vestibule stayed open, so I could see the interior. I didn't find any fixed rule about their opening hours. Generally they stay open on Sunday and often in the morning and late afternoon (6.00 pm) on other days during and close to hours of holy masses. The schedule of holy masses is given outside the church. I came back to some of the churches to visit their interiors. Leave a Comment

GLOWNE MIASTO IS TRANSLATED OLD TOWN by matcrazy1 The oldest and rebuilt after WWII part of Gdansk forms its center/downtown. It's divided into two districts called for historical reasons: - Stare Miasto (the Old Town) - smaller district south of Gdansk shipyard; - Glówne Miasto (the Main Town), larger district full of tourist attractions, south of the above one. But the therm "the old town" in English language is used to name Gdansk Main Town (Glowne Miasto) at least at the directions signs throughout the city. But if you ask Gdansk native about the old town you maybe directed to... the Old Town (Stare Miasto). Aren't you confused? Names of various houses and edificies are not translated exactly from Polish into English, just one example on my picture: Zuraw (a crane) is called "Great Crane". Leave a Comment

handicapped beggar sits at the side of the walkway by Pawtuxet For the most part I didn't see many homeless people or beggars on the streets of Poland. There are nowhere near as many as I see in Washington, DC...to be sure. Be certain you always keep a little extra money somewhere so you don't find yourself penny-less on a street corner. CROWDED LONG MARKET, GDANSK by matcrazy1 The old town of Gdansk may be crowded in summer time. That means you may watch, meet and talk to more visitors. However you maybe forced to wait in a line to visit the most popular museums and exhibitions. There maybe no vacancy in budget hotels or hostels. You maybe forced to wait longer in busy pubs and restaurants. The parking problem is common out of the high season as well. Keep in mind that the old town is most crowded in sunny summer weekends especially long weekends that is close to 1st and 3rd of May and 15th of August (holidays in Poland). Add the most popular annual events like the St Dominic Fair which takes place in August (30 July - 21 August 2005) and the Sopot International Song Festival (August/September). Leave a Comment

Downtown Gdansk is rather clean, not sterile, but just clean. However, there are some dirty off the beaten path streets even in the old town. Once I was dissapointed to see dirty and smelling badly trash cans hidden in medieval brick walls. Hmm... not the best place for trash. Leave a Comment

I was in Gdansk in mostly sunny, but fortunatelly not hot, August. It was the best weather for sightseeing but not always the best for taking pictures. The main street of Gdansk - Long Street (Ulica Dluga) - full of amazing old houses, runs from the east to the west (almost exactly) and the one side of the street is hidden in deep shadow (exception: the early morning) which makes taking any pictures difficult. For fans of photography the best time on a sunny day is right after sunrise (it's too early for me in summer) or before sunset - especially for pictures of architecture and landscapes. The most beautiful pictures I have were taken just that time or... during bad weather (sun on foggy day in a city looks amazing). I remember a map of downtown Wien, Austria with marked the best time (light) for taking pictures by each point of tourist interest. I didn't find such map of Gdansk though. Leave a Comment

If you are going to drive a car around city of Gdansk and it's your first ever driving in Poland take a deep breath and read the tips below. 1. There are a lot of one-way, narrow streets in downtown Gdansk with cars parked along, often partly on a sidewalk. Passing through and navigating may be horrible for you unless you have a very smart navigator in the car and... your car is narrow. 2. There are dead-end streets which end up with a sidewalk. You are usually allowed to park with two side wheels on a sidewalk but driving on a sidewalk is forbidden even if you see some crazy drivers doing it. Do not follow them. 3. Parking is difficult at all due to shortage of parking space. Do not park on a street unless your car is inattractive for thieves (cheap or rare model or the one with... an automatic transmission) and unless you can park quickly between the two other cars. We don't have many car thefts in Poland now, but thefts of car luggage are still a problem. 4. Leave interior of your car empty (no valuables, no boxes, no bags, nothing). 5. Better to be thin and athletic than over-weighted in case of parking on a crowded parking lot. Otherwise you may not open the car door wide enough to take off in case the other car parked very close to yours. It almost happened to me on a parking lot opposite to an entrance gate to the Oliva Park. Navigate around the parking very carefully. KEEP SMILING and HAPPY DRIVING :-) Leave a Comment
