If you are a pilgrim, then the way to reach Czestochowa is on foot, and people make this journey from great distances.

In August, the Polish walking pilgrimages cover the longest distances, e.g.

    Szczecin-Kamieniec Pilgrimage 505-613 kilometers
    Warmia Pilgrimage 450-610 kilometers
    Pomorze Pilgrimage 430-600 kilometers
    Koszalin-Kolobrzeg Pilgrimage 400-600 kilometers
    Warsaw Pilgrimage 240 kilometers

But visiting the shrine at Czestochowa as a tourist, you can do this as a day trip from Krakow, with a train journey time of 2hrs 30mins.

If you're in Warsaw or Cracow, the easiest way to get to Czestochowa is by train.

That's about 2h ride from Cracow, and up to 2.5-3h ride from Warsaw... So you can actually make a return trip within one day :-)

  • In front of the train station there is a taxi waiting area. From here you can take a cab to the monastery, a trip which takes around 10-15 min and costs round 20 zloty (2007).

As always when traveling in taxis in Poland remember to agree on a price from the onset, especially if you can see that the meter is turn off (which it often is).

    Czestochowa Tram System

  • Getting around Czestochowa is pretty easy and cheap, if you wish to use the tram there are a few things you should take note of:

You can buy a tram ticket in most local shops, I tihnk they are about 2zl per ticket. Make sure you get a return ticket (which is basically two tickets).
As soon as you get on the tram you shoud insert one of the tickets into the machine which prints a number on the reverse, if you fail to do this and the ticket inspector gets aboard
then you will get a fine.

As on most public transport, seats should be given up for women (if your male) and the elderly.

There are two bus routes going from Czestichowa to Olsztyn (see my Olsztyn page on info about the ruins etc.) which is located 11 km east of town.
There are two routes going to Olsztyn no. 58 and 67.
Both routes depart from the street behind the train station from Pilsudskiego street. The trip to Olsztyn takes about half an hour or a bit more and prices are about 3,5 Zloty for a single ticket.

The trainstation in Czestochowa is one of the oldest in Poland laying on the Warszawa-Wien railway. The actual building however is built in recent years and offers all that an modern train station should offer.

Inside the station you will also find a chapel, another symbol of the city's status as religious centre.

You will find Regional and national train connections departing and stopping at the station.
As Czestochowa is located on the border of the Dolny Slask area (Lower Silesia) it has a lot of trains to the other cities of the Dolny Slask megalomic city grid.

It's quite good bus transport in Częstochowa. "MPK" bus routes network covers most places in the city and some surrowding villages. In most of kiosks you can buy a single ticket for 2,20 zl or day ticket for 8 zl. You must vaildate your ticket in the machine after you get on the bus or tram. On day ticket is to be validate only once on the first vehicle you travel. Electronic cards for buses are being introduced now.
Częstochowa bus routes are on official Częstochowa maps. You can also visit MPK website where you find map (mapa) and time table (rozkład jazdy) of all buses.
