    Wierd casino

    by dd99 Written Sep 7, 2005

The Orbis casino at the Novotel (centrum - the one at the southern edge of the city center) is WELL worth a visit.

It used to be a nightclub and the interior looks like something out of a 60's caricature - burgundy drapes, deep red carpets, lots of yellow and brown smoked glass, wierd designs on the ceiling, red leather swivel chairs at the bar....

Doesn't cost anything to get in (you have to register though, bring ID). Don;t feel obliged to play (you can spend a few zl at the slots if feeling guilty...)

    Open from 8 pm

A short bus journey from Poznan will take you to the first historic capital of Poland. From here Polish recorded history began.

In Gniezno you will find the valuable Gothic cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin, with remnants of its Romanesque past. Its most precious treasure is a pair of bronze doors cast in the 12th Century and featuring scenes from St. Adalbert's life.

The original building was erected by Poland's first historical ruler, Mieszko I, prior to 997. An archbishopric was established here in 1000, when Mieszko's son Boleslaw the Brave played host to Otto III, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Boleslaw the Brave was crowned here in 1025, as the first King of Poland.

Wolsztyn - small town not far from Poznan with the Europe's only working steam locomotive shed!

Travelling by a steam-pulled regular train from Poznan to Wolsztyn or from Zbaszynek to Leszno is unforgettable. Steam locos go all year round except for ... vacation months (July and Aungust), when the fire risk is too high.

    Enjoy!

Most of the travellers doesn't know about Góreckie Lake, which is situated in the National Park of Wielkopolska and is believed to be the most beautiful in the whole Park. To get there you must turn right from the way from Poznan to Mosina. It's near Puszczykowo. It's one of the most quiet places I've ever been to. You won't regret going there!

If you're like me and just go for the day, you might miss Poznan's Ostrow Tumski. I almost did. And then nearby is a huge, nice park with a very large reservoir. I went there at sunset and it was very nice. Here are pictures, the first of the cathedral, the second of the lake.

If you're into history like I am, you might want to go to Mickiewicz university near the train station. It has two very nice monuments of Mickiewicz, the literary master of the 19th century, and a memorial to the uprisings against Communism during Soviet-occupation. It shows how Poland had indeed, not succumbed, as long as they remained (from Polski Hymn, the national anthem)...

Here's the picture of the lake. I just found out you can't put two pictures in one topic, so I had to make this one.
