We flew to Poznan from Dortmund in Germany with the Hungarian budget airline Wizzair. Poznan Lawica Airport was built in 1913 and is therefore one of the oldest airports in Poland, but the current terminal building is from 2001. A tourist information desk can be found here, where you can get free maps and helpful brochures for your visit. They also sell tickets for the public transport. Poznan Lawica Airport is situated about 7 km west of the city centre. Please also read my "From the airport to the city centre" tip. Leave a Comment

Poznan Airport was opened in 2001 and is approximately 6kms from the town centre with the road outside going straight to the town centre. It has a modern wing shaped roof and a well laid out design. The airport has a number of café/restaurants and shops on the landside together with car hire and tourist information desks, spread over 2 floors. You can pick up bus tickets and maps from the tourist information desk. There is an ATM to one side of the main hall close to the Bureau de change offices, plus an internet terminal. Do not change your money at the airport, the rate on 03/05/08 was 3.90 zoltys to the pound. In the centre of town you can get 4.20 zoltys to the pound. Outside the main entrance you can catch the express bus # L to the main railway station in the town centre and it runs once an hour. The #59 bus which runs 2 or 3 times an hour goes to Baltyk, again close to the town centre. The taxis drop off passengers at the front of the airport and you may get a better rate because of the quicker turn around for them. Taxis can also be found parked around the side of the building. On the airside there are at present only 2 small cafes and no other shops. Leave a Comment

Cathedral on Ostrów Tumski by tpal The picture is of the Poznan Cathedral on the island Ostrów Tumski. The island is across the Warta River. I decided the most efficient way to get there was by taxi. No problem. Hailed a taxi at the old town square, pointed to where I wanted to go on the map (you see I don't speak Polish - an important fact for later), and off we went. The taxi dropped me off right in front. Great! Very nice church and grounds. Well worth the trip, however, now it was time to return. First problem: there is no traffic and therefore no taxis around the cathedral. No problem, I saw a phone booth. I'll just call for a taxis. Second problem: the phone don't take coins - only phone cards and I don't have one. Back to the cathedral looking for source for a phone card. Finally, through hand signals and gestures was able to communicate to a church goer who took pity on me and GAVE me a phone card. Back to phone booth. Problem three: how do I order a taxi when I can't explain what I want or where I am and they can't see my gestures over the phone??? Probably could of and should of walked! In 2006 the situation on highway E30 in area of Poznan changed cardinally. At last the part of a high-speed highway in a detour of the city was finished. Tortures of transit cars and lorries at last ended. It considerably reduced necessary time for crossing Poland by car. Driving on a tall part of the highway makes 11 zlotys (4$). Poznan's airport has excellent public transport connections to the city centre. We took bus #59 which serves a route along the street ul. Bukowska to Rondo Kaponiera (Baltyk), which is just west of the city centre. Bus #59 leaves about every 20 minutes from just in front of the terminal and the trip takes 30 minutes. An alternative is the Express bus "L" which links the airport with the main train station. Tickets can be bought from kiosks and the Tourist Information desk in the terminal building. Tickets are time related, so for example a ticket valid for 30 mins sets you back 3,60 Zloty (2009). It has to be validated on the bus. Please note that night or express services are more expensive. For more information about the public transport system in Poznan please check out my "Explore Poznan by public transport" tip. A taxi from the airport to the city centre should set you back something between 30 to 40 Zloty. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

Poznan's public transport system consists of about 20 tram and more than 50 bus lines. You will most likely mainly use the trams which cover all touristy areas. Tickets can be bought from kiosks and ticket machines, but usually not from the driver. Single tickets are time related which means after validation you can use them for 15 (2 Zloty) or 30 minutes (3,60 Zloty) on any means of transport . A 24 hour ticket will set you back 13,20 Zloty (2009), but as we stayed 5 days in the city we we had had already bought a weekly ticket for 32 Zloty. Leave a Comment

Poznan's main train station (Dworzec Poznan Glowny) is directly connected by an underground passage with the West Station (Dworzec Zachodni). Both stations are situated a short walk southwest of the city centre. Poznan has excellent direct train connections to most bigger cities in Poland, but also to Berlin in Germany. From Poznan we went on a sidetrip to Gnizno by train. This route is served several times per day by both regional and IC trains. Depending on the type of train the journey time takes between 45 and 60 minutes and single tickets cost between 10 and 14 Zloty. Leave a Comment

Although Poznan with its almost 600.000 inhabitans is almost a big city, the city centre is still very walkable. Most of the main sights are in walking distance to the Old Market Square (Stary Rynek). Also there are many pedestrianised streets or pathways which are not accessible to cars or public transportation anyway. For orientation purposes you will find signposts with distances to the main sights and buildings all around the town. Leave a Comment Theme: Other
