The Town Hall is a real pearl in Poznan's architecture. Poznan started to build its houses of stone in the end of XIII century. One of the first stone buildings - the Town Hall (Domus Konsulum). First it was low, two-storeyed building. Then it was completed by the tower which became the symbol of independence of the city. In due course the building burned down, and authorities addressed to Italian architect Jan Quadro with the request to construct a new building. The construction proceeded 10 years, since 1550. As a result the Town Hall got features which we can see today. Arcades of loggias and Renaissance forms put it in the line with the best European buildings in Renaissance style. However the Town Hall was reconstructed many times. The building was decorated with a high spike. The 90-meter building admired visitors. But the hurricane of 1725 destroyed the spike. After restoration the Town Hall decreased to 61 m. The two-meter eagle which was placed in the same century on the edge of the spike, went successfully through all historical troubles and till now remains one of the symbols of the city. The Museum of history of the city settles down now in the building of the Town Hall which is deservedly named the most interesting and valuable secular monument of Poznan.

Poznan - Trading houses by Kuznetsov_Sergey A number of narrow three-tier small houses with an arcade is molded to each other to the south of the Town Hall. It is a lot of centuries back salt, fish and different trifles had been sold there, and in XV century dealers started to build such houses. They traded on below floor, and lived on upper floors. After restoration the buildings got initial shape, and now there is a brisk trade.

Poznan - The Cathedral by Kuznetsov_Sergey The first Christian church was constructed in Poznan in days of Meshko I. It was kept not very long and was destroyed during invasions of pagans. In the middle of XI century the new Cathedral in Romance style was erected on its place. Then it was reconstructed many times, while the restored temple was destroyed with last world war. The Cathedral was built up once again. Thus it kept those Gothic features which it had in the XV century. The official name of the Cathedral: Archicathedral sacred Peter and Paul's Basil. This oldest cathedral in the city is the true monument of Christian culture. Pope John Paul II appropriated it the honorary title "Basils - the pride of Poznan". In the Cathedral there are many chapels with ashes of Polish kings. The most famous is the Golden Chapel in which one can find sarcophaguses of first rules of Poland, like Mieszko I, or Boles³aw Chrobry. Equally well-known is the "Holy Sacrament Chapel" with a marvellous Renaissance gravestone.

Poznan - The Monumemt of the Saint Nepomucen by Kuznetsov_Sergey The stone figure of Saint Nepomucen towers between cloth shops and the Arsenal. This Prague archbishop in 1393 under the order of the Czech king Vaclav was sentenced to death and was dumped to Vltava. The legend says, that the priest refused to reveal to the king the secret of a confession of his spouse. Four centuries later the Catholic church canonized him. Inhabitants of Poznan erected this monument in hope, that Saint Nepomucen would save the city from flooding. Their hopes were not justified. The memorial plate testifies it: at an entrance of the house N50 from the east side of the square. The water level of Warta during flooding of 1736 is specified there.

The central square of the city established in 1253 on the left bank of the Warta River was designed on the base of a square with four 141 - metre sides. Of the twelve streets starting at the square, four (Wroc³awska, Wroniecka, Wielka and Wodna) used to lead to the city gates. The ensemble of the stone buildings surrounding the market square (Stary Rynek) is deserved the separate description. These buildings as a rule are three-tier. The top floors served as habitation, and masterful or trading rooms occupied the bottom floor. Later there were palaces of rich Polish gentry (Shljahta). In the end of XIX century trams already rumbled and gas lamps flashed there. In June days the annual holiday - the fair continuing trading traditions of the Middle Ages take place there.

Colorful Little Street by tpal The coloration of the Parish House (above) was a very distinctive and unexpected coral and white. It seemed to influence the buildings adjacent to it on the same street. Almost as unexpected as the colors was the spectacular and elaborate buildings located on this narrow back street which shared the same colors. Leave a Comment

Stary Marych is a fictious but typcial citizen of Poznan. The character was created by the actor Marian Pogasz for a local radio programme, where Stary Marych told short stories about daily life as well as about politics in a local accent. The bronze statue of Stary Marych and his bicycle was erected in 2001. Directions: The Statue of Stary Marych stands in the Wiosny Ludow Square, which is located at the northern end of the pedestrianised shopping street Polwiejska. Leave a Comment

The Parish House by tpal I was looking for the "off-the-beaten-track" Poznan and recalled a place called the Parish House. This surely must be a little, quaint building with the character of the common man. Not quite! Turns out the Parish House is a 17th century Baroque church that seemed more like a basilica than a "house". Really stunning. Leave a Comment

Działyński Palace (the house №78) is one of the most beautiful buildings on the Town Hall square. It is the valuable monument of secular architecture. The late - Baroque Działyński Palace was constructed in 1773-87 by Antoni Höhne for the rich Lithuanian dignitary - Władysław Gurowski. In the beginning of following century it was passed to Dzjalynskih family. In due time the palace was the center of cultural and political life. There were presentations of amateur theatres, concerts, exhibitions. Patriots gathered in the palace during revolts. The hospital for wounded insurgents was arranged there. In 1925 the last owner of the palace Zamojsky presented the palace to the city. It was burnt in 1945 and rebuilt in the years 1953-57 according to a design by Aleksander Holas. Now the building belongs to the Polish academy of sciences. The library from Kornik - the patrimonial estate of Działyński-Zamojsky is placed in the building now. The bas - reliefs on the attic depict a triumphal procession and a sacrificial one; in the middle, what catches your eye immediately is the statue of a swan with outstretched wings.
