It may be surprising to hear- but here in Szczecin there are a few police patrols which consist of the rider and his/her horse :) The program was launched a few years ago and was well received by the locals. The horse patrols can be seen in the area of parks and places for recreation ( Kasprowicza Park, Jasne Blonia, Arkonka, surroundings of Glebokie lake). Leave a Comment

Szczecin by sprdak11 At Unii Lubelskiej Street in the near proximity of the University Hospital there is a Napoleon's Mound. It was made by French soldiers during the occupation of the town by Napoleon Bonaparte's Army in 1808 to honour the Emperor ( his 39th birthday at 15th August). There are five oak trees and the small monument in the middle. The picture was taken at the sunrise. Leave a Comment Other Contact: Unii Lubelskiej Street

There is a huge collection of books ( also in other languages), some very old ones , and the internet cafe. The building is quite modern and nicely looking outside and inside. Often some art galleries are organised here , too. It's situated at Podgorna Street 15/16, just opposite the building of the rectorate of my Medical University, and close to the St. Jacob Cathedral. The Lake Szmaragdowe (Emerald Lake, by 1945 ger. Hertasee) located in Bukowa Woods (Beech Woods, by 1945 ger. Buchheide Forst) is widely considered one of the most beautiful places in Szczecin. Its name comes from the calcium carbonate dissolved in water making it amazingly green. The lake is 16-20-metre-deep. The lake appeared on the 26th July 1925 after the chalk mine belonging to the factory of Portland cement "Stern" had been flooded with subsoil waters. 39 miners died then. Until today there are remnants of mining machines and facilities at the bottom of the lake (you can see them when the weather is fine). When looking from the Kopalniana Street (by 1945 ger. Katharinenweg) side, you will see a vantage bridge which used to be the part of the route of mining trains. According to the legend, the one responsible for appearing of the lake was the Treasure Keeper, the lord of underworld. He flooded the mine when workers found the treasure chests he was looking after. Due to this legend, the water gained its green colour when a gigantic emerald had been broken into tiny pieces. According to another story, flooding of the mine was the punishment for miners' immorality. The Germans named the lake, "Hertasee", after Herta, the Teutonic goddess of earth. Before 1945, another name, "Kreidesee" (Chalk Lake) was also in use.
