Royal Gate, Brama Jazz Cafe, Szczecin, Poland. by planxty I'm really struggling to know where to put this tip. It fits equally comfortably under restaurant, nightlife and things to do, so I'll just put it here. This is the Brama Jazz cafe, obviously one of the "happening" places in Szczecin. As you can see from the photo is is housed in one of the old gates of the City, this one the Royal Gate built in 1725 - 1727, and, as a piece of architecture, it is very impressive. On the exterior wall there is a plaque dedicated to Dezdery Chiapowski, imprisoned in Szczecin for leading a Polish uprising in 1834. Inside, it is a completely different proposition, a very pleasant cafe bar with a modern interior. I didn't eat here myself, but the ciabatta that Mrs.-p had looked dleicious. I can, however, vouch for the quality of the Tyskie beer. The food has a generally Italian theme and is only served during the day, not in the evenings, when the place becomes a sort of nightclub. It is obvious that this is where the "bright young things" of Szczecin hang out, it seems terribly trendy although not off-putting. Should you require such a thing, they have wifi access for your laptop computer, a situation much utilised by the aforementioned "bright young things". The excellent website (Polish only) probably describes the place much better than I can in this short tip. Be aware if you sit in one of the particularly comfortable settees that the very heavy glass designer chandaliers are probably lower than you think. I cracked my head against one, and it was fairly solid, I can tell you. Then again, it was probably the fault of the Tyskie! Leave a Comment Address: Pl. Pomeranian Dukes castle, Szczecin, Poland. by planxty, 4 more photos This would have to be high on the lists of "must sees" for visitors to Szczecin. Sited on a commanding position (originally strategic, no doubt) it is one of the landmarks of the City skyline, along with the huge Basilica (see seperate tip). The first structure here was built in 1346 - 1347 by Duke Barnim III, one of the Pomeranian Dukes it is named for. Extended over the years by successive Dukes, it was completely rebuilt in the mid 16th century in Rennaissance style, and was much as we see it today. The depradations of World War 2 seriously damaged the structure of the building, and much rebuilding work had to be undertaken in the post-war period. Judging by the numbers of workmen I saw about the place, that work continues to this day. The Castle is obviously the cultural centre of the City, housing the Opera House and the Museum of the Sargophagi and Art Gallery (see seperate tip) amongst other things. There is an open air arena in the central courtyard which has concerts in good weather. The only thing that slightly detracts from this otherwise beautiful building is the unsightly graffiti on the exterior walls (see main photo) but I suppose that is an unfortunate fact of modern life. Admission to the complex itself is free, although there are seperate charges for the Museum etc. Leave a Comment Address: ul. Tourist information centre, Szczecin, Poland. by planxty the tourist information office is situated at the rear of the Pomerainian Dukes Castle. The staff are helpful and speak English. There are also a number of publications in English, German and Danish. What you really should get is the guide to the City Tourist route (see seperate tips) which costs 4Zl. this really is indispensible, and is a great tool to help you get the most out of the city. The website given is not the Tourist Information site per se, but it gives a lot of useful information on the city. Leave a Comment
