Szczecin red route guide. by planxty Actually, don't, because there isn't a yellow brick road in Szczecin (as far as I know). If you want to see all that the city has to offer, you should actually follow a very helpful "red route" with the aid of the guide (pictured). There is a red dashed line painted on the pavements which will lead you all around the city, and periodically there are numbers written in red also. These numbers correspond to information on the guide about the builidng you are beside. Unfortunately, time and weather conspired a bit against us, so we didn't manage to walk the entire length of the route (about 7km.) which begins and ends at the Railway Station. The guide is available in English and German as well as Polish from the Tourist Information shop in the Pomeranan Dukes Castle (see seperate tip) and costs 4zl. I would say it is a good investment as it ensures you will miss nothing. Leave a Comment

Flora statue, Szczecin, Poland. by planxty If you are following your tourist red route guide this one comes along at number 25. The statue dates from the 18th century and was designed by one J.G.Blume. If you're interested, Flora was a goddess of flowers and the season of spring, hence the term entering the English language as in "flora and fauna". Personally, I think a bit of high-pressure hosing wouldn't go amiss - she is a bit grubby, poor thing. Leave a Comment Directions: In the small park between the Basilica and Pl. Orla Bialego

Maiden Tower (Tower of 7 coats), Szczecin, Poland. by planxty This building, dating from the start of the 14th century is also known as the tower of Seven Coats. I frankly have no idea why. If you're following your red tourist route (see seperate tip) it is number 11 on the map. It was used as a prison until 1723. As best I could tell, it's not possible to enter it. Leave a Comment Directions: Between the Dukes Castle and the river in the shadow of the slip road for the large bridge.

Marine Museum, Szczecin, Poland. by planxty This is the Marine museum although, in truth, it is very much more than that. As you can see from the photo, it is a beautiful building, designed by William Meyer Schwartau and opened in 1913. As you enter, the interior with the broad sweeping staircase is very impressive. On the ground floor are exhibits tracing local history from prehistoric times, and also a history of the maritime history of the city. Included in this is an excellent collection of model ships, if that's your thing. Ascending the staircase, there is an atrium absolutely full of reproduction Greek busts. Mrs.-p, a native Greek, was able to name them to me, which was helpful, as my classical Greek isn't all it might be! Turning left at the top of the stairs you are led into what is probably the most interesting part of the museum, a series of tableaux used to display the various exhibits in relation to ethnography. Featured areas are Africa, Polynesia and South America. They are really well done, some of the best I've seen, and make best use of the available material. On the other side of the upper floor is a more recent history of the city in the post World War 2 period. For those of us brought up in the 60's and 70's with the "Cold War" and the "Iron Curtain" it was a fascinating insight into how those "on the other side" lived. My particular favourite exhibit here was perhaps the strangest motorcycle I have ever seen. It was something like a mutant Ariel Leader for the bikers amongst you, with the most appalling pastel green livery. Absolutely intriguing. A couple of video presentations showing life in Communist times will conclude your tour of a very fine museum. We were slightly pressed for time, but you could easily spend half a day in here. Admission is 6zl. Open 10-16 Tue-Thur-Sun; 9-15 Wed; closed on Mon. Recommended. Leave a Comment

Boguslawa Promenade is my favorite place to go. Plenty of restaurants to choose from and plenty of cafes. During the summer you can seat outside and enjoy great weather and cold beer. During late evenings and nights there is lots of happenings like concerts and smal shows or plays. Off course it is all free of charge. Address: Boguslawa streetDirections: Between Jagiellonska str and Wojska Polskiego str

Mast monument, Szczecin, Poland. by planxty This rather impressive structure is a relatively new addition to the Szczecin skyline, having only been erested in 1990. It is the mast from a steamship, the SS Kapitan Maciejewicz, which was built in 1929. It stands on the site of the old City theatre which was built in 1848 and destroyed by Allied air raids in the last war. It was subsequently demolished in 1953. I can only assume the roads have been widened since, or else it must have been the narrowest theatre in history! Leave a Comment Address: Trasa Zamkowa, near solidarnosc Park.Directions: Walk towards the Old town from the big new bridge and it is in the middle of the road - difficult to miss really!

The "thing" you MUST do while you are in Szczecin is to take a boat ride on Odra river. You can find those boats docked right on Waly Chrobrego harbor. There is few operators, so ask how long is the ride, compare boats and prices, etc. You can't go wrong. Make sure you get a whole table on the deck for you and your friends and before boat takes off go get some cold beers from the bar downstairs. We went with my whole family one "almost sunny" day and we had a great time. Santo loved it, he never saw a shipyard from the water. Boat we were on took us as far as the Bismarck tower, which is north of the city. We also saw some wildlife and local life along the river. After a boat ride I recommend a coffee on the deck of another boat, LADOGA. LADOGA is an restaurant I describe in my RESTAURANT TIP. Address: Waly CHrobregoDirections: Odra River area

Szczecin - the Sea Festival by Polish_Mila In Szczecin there are many nice events enjoyed by inhabitants as well as tourists. In June great sailing ships visit Szczecin. That year there was a real crowd trying to get on the board of the second largest sailing ship of the world "Kruzenstern" and other wonderful sailing ships like "Fryderyk Chopin". In June there is also the biggest event in Szczecin - a Sea Festival - DNI MORZA. There are many artistic presentations, sports and recreation events, games with prizes and the most wonderful firework show and gala of sailing vessels. You can't miss it - visit Szczecin in June!!! St. James (Jacobs) Basilica, Szczecin, Poland. by planxty, 2 more photos Actually, to give it it's full title it is the Archcathedral Basilica under the Invocation of St. James, but there wasn't nearly enough room to put all that in the header line. Although not a Christian myself, I frequently find myself awestruck (in the correct sense of the word) by cathedrals. Canterbury, St. Albans and Krakow certainly spring to mind in this respect. The Basilica from the outside provoked exactly the same feeling. It is absolutely massive. The sheer scale of it almost beggars belief, and it dominates the skyline of a good proportion of central Szczecin. A brief history then. A church was apparently founded on the site in 1187 by one Beringer, and building work continued from that time until the 16th century when the building reached it's present impressive dimensions. So it remained for several centuries until the horrors of (relatively) modern warfare were visited upon it during the Second World War and it suffered serious damage. Restoration was slow enough in coming, beginning in 1972, and it would appear that more work is still necessary. When we visited, the entire interior resembled a building site, with builders trundling wheelbarrows up the central aisle and all manner of material lying about everywhere. It was still, however, possible to appreciate the grandeur of the place. There are various small chapels inside dedicated to various groups (victims of Stalinism and Nazism, Pomeranian Dukes etc.) and some of the stained glass work is stunning. Admission is free, although donations are welcome and there is a small gift shop just inside the main door. Again apologies for the photos - that overcast day problem again. the second picture is of a side chapel and the third of Mrs_p. beside the huge bell in the precincts. Leave a Comment Address: Soltysia at the junction of Grodzka.
