by Carmela71 Driving between Portimao and Albufeira you can visit some lovely beaches. When we stopped in Carvoeiro, at the tourist office (that was open on a Sunday) they suggested us to visit some places as this beach, even if the photos do not show its beauty as it was afternoon and the sun was making photos a little bit difficult lol it was for me the most impressive. I suggest to go in the morning for photos :-) Leave a Comment

by Carmela71 Driving between Portimao and Albufeira we stopped at Carvoeiro for a snack and also we visited the beach. This little beach remind me the calas of Ibiza, with the fisherman little houses but this ones also on the mountain, not only on the beach. You can see lots of signs at the boats to visit the caves by sea :-) maybe next time :-) Leave a Comment

by bugalugs We liked the old town of Albufeira very much. Winding cobbled streets, pavement cafes and restaurants. A place where when you turn another corner you want to explore more. As I said there is also a part known as the 'strip' more modern, for the younger element, discos. noisey at night. We never actually walked up the strip, we were told about it by some visitors we met, they didnt like it so we gave it a miss. Leave a Comment

the end of the world by MATIM Sagres lies at the extreme south-west point of Europe The lighthouse dates from 1906, it has the strongest beam of light of Europe, the light extending over 100 km. My husband walked all the way to the lighthouse but the wind was too strong for me! It is impressive to know you are at the extreme point of Europe! They call this westerly point : Gabo de St. Vincente. Prince Hendrik the seafarer was the founder of the navigate school during the 15th century. His house is still there, nowadays used as a youth hostel. During the period of the seafarers the capes of Sagres and Sao Vincente where holy places, people shivered when they looked down at the dark ocean, in their opinion the end of the world! Hendrik the seafarer (1394 1460) proved with his discoveries that there was more at the other end of the Atlantic ocean. All the famous seafarers came from his school : Vasco da Gama who discovered the sea road to India. And the discoverer form Brasilia, Cabral Magellan, who sailed around the world. Leave a Comment

what's left of the castle walls by call_me_rhia The name Albufeira is of Arabic origin: "Al-buhera" means in fact "the Sea Castle". In town there was once, therefore, a castle - and its possible that the entire town was walled. Very little of it remains a small part of the wall. Its located at the Rua Joaquim Pedro Samora. Further away - and continuing along the same road - youll find 2 plaques made of tiles, marking the place where two of the walled-towns doors were located. once a mosque - now a chapel by call_me_rhia This little chapel, hidden among white houses, used to be during the moorish invasion, a little mosque. When the Moors were chased away it became the Governors chapel and subsequently - in 1499 - it was restored and became the "Capela da Misericrdia". It doesnt look so old from the outside, however, and this is due to the fact that most of the exterior had been demolished in 1755 by a big earthquake. When it was re-restored part of it were rebuilt in gothic style. Inside you can see a carved wooden altar piece supporting an image of Our Lady of the Visitation and of the Dead Father and also the tomb of Rui Dias who was probably the first Governor of the Castle. the cute little church of st. Ana by call_me_rhia This little church is my favourite of all the churches in Albufeira: its tiny but its decorations make it of outstanding beauty. The ceilings intricate pattern is really charming - and it seems that the idea of the cupola and surrounding pinnacles belong to popular architecture. I guess that theres something of a Moorish influence, too, in the white-washed cupola. It was built in the 18th century and it is located in the Largo Jacinto dAyet square. Fishermen's Beach, Old Town by Geoff_Wright So why did you chose Albufeira? It has lots to offer, but the beaches are really great! Soft golden sand, and usually plenty of room to set down your towel and relax. There are areas of the most popular beaches, like Fishermans Beach, where there are sunbeds and beach umbrellas laid out, for hire. I think you'll find that you are not permitted to set up your own beach umbrella within a certain distance of the official ones, so be aware! Leave a Comment

detail of the bell tower by call_me_rhia Its the first thing that caught my eye when entering Albufeira: I looked up and saw this strange wrought-iron structure on top of a bell tower. I later learned that it is considered the symbol of the city: its in Rua Bernardino de Sousa. Is it a church? Im not sure. It surely looks like one however I know that once the building used to be the country jail. Was it then turned into a church? I very much doubt so Leave a Comment Address: albufeiraDirections: in the old town

quietness... by the beach by call_me_rhia The real sight for people coming to Albufeira - or Algarve in general - is the sea... amazing, clean and crystal-clear... at times blue, at times green! The beaches are amazing, too... ochre in colour - but with the right sunlight they look as if they are made of gold... and endless. I went in Amrch - and they were really empty - beautiful - quiet (and yes, the water was too cold to swim!). I have the feeling - however - that in the high season, when it gets really crowded - much of this natural charm is lost. Leave a Comment Address: albufeiraDirections: along the coast
