Albufeira Things to Do

  • Old Town

    4.5 out of 5 stars

The crazy construction that disfigured Algarve, has (thanks God!) spared the central area of old Albufeira. Now, cleaned and organized for touristy exhibition, the central Albufeira looks good, and, for some minutes, allows us to forget the insanity of exploitation seeking for euros (or dollars, or... just money!) that grew around it.

  • Beach

Thirty years ago Albufeira was "the capital" of tourism in Algarve and a vacation paradise. Today, it is the center of all the excesses in massive building and loss of quality, but the beach is still there (spreading along the coast), the fishermen keep on working (not much), and with luck, you may get your own space.

Albufeira Restaurants

  • In the best place

Usually, I skip restaurants in first line of the beach; some of them sell views instead of food, some other include the "view tax" in the invoice. This time I accepted the risk, and choose a restaurant by the sea, in the old fisherman's beach.Well, the food was good and, if the "views tax" was included, it was not excessive. Mixed grilled fish

  • Good esplanade and lunch

Fernanda wanted to stay in the sun; I wanted the shade; hard situation until we saw Pampas esplanade. We sat at the edge of the shade and had a surprisingly good meal. I say surprisingly because, from outside, it seemed a fast food restaurant. Well... it isn't!Everything was perfect, and the price very acceptable for Albufeira standards.I will...

  • Persistent presence

This restaurant is part of my old memories of Albufeira. I've been there more than 40 years ago, eating a tuna stake, when it was... expensive.Lots of alternatives were open since then, and I don't visit it for a long time.Still good? Still expensive?Maybe! But still standing after all these years, and that is its best certificate.

  • Stroll in the freshness

If you have no specific program, a good idea is walking around in the centre of Albufeira: each bar and restaurant have their performance, with live music to attract clients to sit. Street animation is sometimes fun, and... everybody goes there, with the centre and the so called "strip area" always crowded.

Albufeira Transportation

  • Local buses

The fast growth of Albufeira justified the creation of a local bus network, called Giro. It covers all the city now, with four different routes, identified by different colours. If you decide to go a little further there are regional buses, being EVA the main company in Algarve.

  • Parking solution

Parking is a nightmare in Albufeira. The best solution is to use a small and dusty area east of the beach, and use the escalators nearby. The problem is that, after the construction of the mechanic escalators, the park seems to be shrinking!

Albufeira Shopping

  • Ice shops in te Middle of the old town

Be careful here - we got ripped off for four cones - 13 euro's they were extortionate - the price charged was random - avoid at all cost please. There are plenty of little shops who offer a good service just adjacent - but this was a total rip off!

  • Umbrella

During the summer months you cannot do without an umbrella (and sunhat). At the beach you can rent umbrella and deck chairs (5 euro each - sept 2009), but buying an umbrella shouldn't cost you more that maybe 7 euro 50 or maybe 10 euro.

Experience a truly local market - stalls selling locally grown produce and fresh fish, local meats. Don't miss out on the best oranges you will ever taste, and also the small sweet melons, and locally produced honey. It is a fairly long walk there but all downhill coming back and will take about 40 minutes at a fair pace! Oranges (get them anywhere...

Albufeira Local Customs

  • Lota

The fish comes from the boats and goes straight to the counters. The lady picks a couple of soles and puts them in the scale. One of the soles jumps from the scale and falls in the floor, she picks it again and weighs the lot. The costumer pays the demanded amount, about one half of what it would cost next day (or week) in the supermarket. It's...

Albufeira Warnings and Dangers

  • women offering lifts to drunk tourists

Had a fantastic break in albufeira, a group of 26 of us descended for a week long break, we did have 2 occasions where drunken members of our party were offered lifts back to our apartment blocks after a night on the strip and upon taking the single female driver up on the offer of a lift and jumping in found that the women were not in fact women...

  • Building Pressure

I'm one of the privileged guys that knew Algarve more than 40 years ago, when Nature was respected, and the sea side was a paradise. The density of construction by the sea is criminal, and the "wild" coast between Albufeira and Oura is the best example.I spent almost 20 years skipping Algarve, refusing what has been done there. I'm not resigning...

  • Ask where your bus will leave you!!

This is not really a trap but a recommendation: when you take a bus to Albufeira just ask beforehand where it will leave you cause in Albufeira there are two bus stations. The Central or Main Station is outside Albufeira on a hill and the other is close to the city center, so if the bus will leave you at the central station you will need a taxi to...

The "strip" in Montechorro has dozens of restaurants and bars. Most of the restaurants use touts to pull you in to their premises but the quality is generally poor and the prices are very high. The strip has several side roads and even roads parallel to it where you will often experience far better service and value. Try to avoid eating on the...

Albufeira Off The Beaten Path

  • "Reveillon"

The main beach at Albufeira is nice... but if you can get in a car, there are very nice secluded, beautiful beaches to the west of the city. Praia do Evaristo is one of them. • Saudade

To know Portugal you need to understand the meaning of the word "Saudade", which has no exact translation in any language.
