The captains Table is owned by the people who own Paddy's Bar and serves up by all accounts some nice food, My mum and Dad did call in during the late morning when it was empty and just asked for a drink but were politly turned away as they only serve drinks with food, It is a shame because after sitting their thay may have decided to eat or we may have gone back during the evening. I can understand them saying you can not have a drink if it is busy but when it's empty it just seems silly to me.
waited for 45 mins for food to arrive and then only one meal came ,My wife had eaten her main course when i complained my food not arrived waiter tutted and moaned under his breath it arrived cold and waiter claims it had been left on the side !!! i asked him for another meal which he delivered 15mins later still mumbling under his breath we were reluctant to pay full price especially as said waiter then charged us kilo weight for food instead of menu price which is what was ordered worst place we have been to after 3 holidays in alvor in 6 years
Our first encounter with this restaurant came after walking up R Antonio Jose de Almeida one night and seeing the silhouette of Elvis Presley with one hand pointing out and his knee shaking.
As we neared Elvis he stopped his stage act as he turned around, looked at us and immediately changed in to a Chinese lad, who then gave us a menu for China Garden Restaurante.
Well after this encounter we just had to go.
It's a nice restaurant but not large so booking in busy times would be advised (as in all restaurants in Alvor)
Food was good and great value. Of course they have the usual set menus and a wide choice of dishes.
Favorite Dish: They have a number of special offers including 5.90 E for a starter, main course, Fried rice or chips.
Or for 20.00 E for 2 people (which is what we had)
half peking duck with pancakes or 2 spring rolls or 2 chicken soups.
Sweet sour chicken or sizzling beef.
2 fried rice
2 ice cream
0.375L house wine or 2 soft drinks
For 40 years Luis and his family have served wonderful food with wonderful service, at a spectacular beach setting this wooden Beach Restaurant has Great fresh fish served daily along with many other delicious dishes, you don't have to eat though, if you just want a drink that is fine and indeed it is a great place to sit and watch people on the beach and is a great place to watch the sun set over the sea. I will call in here for a drink in the mornings after having a walk along the beach and for lunch at some point during my visit to Alvor.
(They also rent sun shades and sunbeds on the beach)
Favorite Dish: Fresh grilled fish, cataplanas, monkfish kebabs, tiger prawns, avocados stuffed with prawns and a large list of excellent steaks Chicken and loads more.
This beautiful restaraunt is just outside the town center and is certainly worth a visit.
It has that traditional feel and look but with a style that you would only find in high class restaraunts.
The service is fantastic and very attentive with out you feeling pesterd, the sort of place that if you drop a fork off the table a waiter would apear from nowhere , catch it and put it back on the table before you had even realised you might have dropped it
The food Is lovely, not the largest portions around but certainly enough to fill you.
I had a starter of Smoked Ham with Gherkins followed by a main course of Green Pepperd Sirloin Steak, served with French fries carrots and green beans. All beautifully cooked, the steak melted in my mouth the pepper sauce was just right and the veg cooked to perfection.
Declining a sweet my mouth watered as my mothers strawberry flambe was prepared at the table.
All in all a most enjoyable experience.
We visited again in 2008 and the only thing i can add is that the Sirloin Steak with Bearnaise sauce was delicious.
Not the cheapest restaurant around but certainly a lot more reasonable than you would expect judging by the looks, style, service and food.
Please note: This Restaurant closes from the end of November untill the end of December.
Good old fashion food.Real mash potatoes, fresh vegetables-not frozen.House specials like bacon & cabbage and braised oxtail etc.Really laid back atmosphere and good for all the family.Live music starts at 10 everynight. Its important to make the effort to walk up the stairs and have a look at The Bistro as its much prettier than you would expect.
Favorite Dish: They do a massive steak thats great if you have a big appetite but they'l split it for two of you if you like,so you can have steak for two for 20 euros!!All the sauces were really nice and they organise childrens dishes too.
We Found Big Reds on the out skirts of Alvor and went back 3 times on our 2 week holiday. The food is fantastic and the Staff friendly. Its not a large restaurant but really clean and cosy lots of art work on the walls and nice seating area outside. We loved the Ribs as this is their signature dish and the feel off the bone with lots of flavor. I also loved the crisy duck starter and the sea bass. My husband enjoyed the steaks cook how he liked. you should definitely try.
Favorite Dish: Its a hard one as i enjoyed so much but the RIBS are the best i have every had.
it is class. food ,staff ,oweners ,location. this resturant has everything going for it. rogerio and his irish wife cathy are very welcoming. the staff are lovely nothing is any trouble.
Favorite Dish: shrimp coctail is so lovely as a starter to dinner at night or light refreshing bite at lunchtime.served with fresh fruit surrounding the plate on a bed of shredded lettuce. maderia steak or any of the steaks melt in your mouth, brillant.
Down a side street in an old wine storehouse this Restaurant is not big but it has had and continues to get some really good reviews in the local tourist papers, The food was good and the portions large but it did seem slightly expensive compared to some of the other restaurants in the area.
When we visited there was only us and another couple in it may have been a better experience if there had been more people in and more of an atmosphere.
I am planning on visiting again later this year,
The Owners also own the Cinco Quinas Restaurante on the beach and have just opened a Snack bar called Estrela Do Mar which is near the Alisuper.
Update October 2008:
We called in again and i had Shrimp Cocktail followed by fried Cod Algarve style and it was delicious, Service was ood and the restaurant busy so had a great bustling atmosphere, totaly different than my first visit, I would certainly recomend it.
There is a Welsh bar/cafe in Alvor, it is on Rue Pedro Alvares Cabrai the road that runs parralel to Rue dr fredrico mendes (the main st running down to old fishmarket) about half way down.
Look out for the Red Dragon
sadly this cafe has now closed down and is up for sale (oct 2008)
nice little restaurant with small balcony on main street.
Favorite Dish: chicken piri piri and portugese steak were superb.dont usually do chips when abroad but the ones i had with the piri piri were better than my mams, and they are good.
pleasant little restaurant on main street in alvor.caters for all types of cuisine.just sit on little balcony and watch the world go by
Favorite Dish: chicken piri piri and their portugese steak were superb.when i go on holiday i like to eat the local food and keep off eating chips.but the chips with the piri piri were the best iv`e had, even better than my mams, and they are good.hope she doesnt read this lol.
This is near the front but a little up the hill away from the other restaurants and has a few tables outside on decking. It is a little bit smaller and better for it as the staff are friendly, quick and efficient-we only went in because the food on the outside grill smelled so good so we were being nosy and despite being busy the chef explained what they all were without the hard sell. The pork ribs are excellent as was the fillet kebab. The tiger prawns starter has 6 as a portion but they are BIG and need to be shared, and i would recommend the peri-peri spicy butter with them it is delicious!
Set on the main square along with a small church and shops this Bar is normally full of Locals enjoying a Coffee or a beer while watching the world go by. The place has that Local feel and a lot of tourists may be put off on entering as it does have a cafe look. You can sit outside as the square is usually full of tables and chairs and it's a great place to spend some time watching Village life.
You are spoilt for choice at the harbour for fantastic fish restaurants but are two worth mentioning .One is near to the lifeboat house, the fishermans restaurant, where you can see them cooking the sardines outside on a grill and the smell is just amazing. If the weathers good as it is most of the time you can sit outside and hear the sea whilst you eat! the other restaurant is just up the hill slightly, restaurante a lota and you can eat outside or there is an upstairs closed in terrace with pretty good views. They have a tank of stuff you can choose from or the waiters will show you what they ve got in that day thats the portion size you want.
Favorite Dish: Pick a fish, it will be delicious
Portuguese, Chinese, Indian, English, Italian Alvor has a great choice of places to eat!
