  • Steak on a stone

The Buganvillia is a great Restaurant that serves traditional Portuguese food with a few extras, Although it's not a traditional looking restaurant and does indeed look more like a hotel dining room or a couple of Apartments made into one big room with an open kitchen it still looks great, modern with a few traditional bits of decor and great...

  • A Great Night!

Probably my favourite of the Irish bar's in Alvor (and there are a few!). Great atmosphere in here and great live music every night! They also show live sport on 6 large screens around the pub. Have only been in the evenings so couldn't comment on what it's like during the day, but I can't see it being anything but great!

  • smells fishy

this is a cracking little bar on the top of a small bank.get yourself a cold beer, grab a seat next to the door, and just take in the moment.looking down on the harbour watching the sunset and the smell of the fish cooking on the barbecues.sheer bliss

  • small converted fishermans hut

There is a small bar just up from the harbour not on the main street but as the road forks to the left, its really easy to miss as it is really small, about the size of someones living room. We found it was a good place to chill out without all the blary chart music and karaoke that dominates most bars on the main street, the owner even had a...

When we arrive in Portugal the best way to get to your hotel and to get around while you are there is to Hire a car. there are a lot of Car hire companys which operate from Faro airport, All the major car hire companys are there as well as a lot of smaller ones. • trains along the coast

there is a small train station in portimao which is only a short bus ride from alvor much more accessible than going to lagos. From here you can get to silves, Faro, Tavira and many other places which might cost you a lot of money on organised trips where a full day is not necessary. The station looks a bit dilapidated like a wildwest town as do...

Alvor Local Customs

  • The Cock of Barcelos

At a Banquet given by a rich Landowner in Barcelos the silver was stolen and one of the guests was accused of the theft. He was tried by the court and found guilty. In spite of overwhelming evidence against him he still protested his innocence. The magistrate granted the man a final chance to prove his case. Seeing a Cock in a basket nearby he said...

  • Let sleeping dogs lie

It would appear that a local custom in Alvor, is for all the dogs to come out at night and find a nice patch of sand to sleep on! We saw this sight one night when looking for a restaurant, and heading towards where there are some high rise buildings.

Alvor Tourist Traps

  • averageyorkshirejoe's Profile Photo

by averageyorkshirejoe Written Aug 21, 2008

There are some reataurants on the beach down near the rocks which have the most amazing views at sunset and are a really special place to go but we were a little disappointed. The food was more expensive than in town which is to be expected as you're paying for the ambience as well, but the quality of the food is far less than many of the others in town and the service is only ok. They seem to be too busy to really look after you sincerely and seemed geared towards guests from the nearby beachfront hotels. Maybe we caught them on a bad day but it was definately a case of hype/reputation over reality

Unique Suggestions: If you do really want to go just enjoy the view and accept the food but i think there are far better places to try

Alvor What to Pack

  • Don't forget the mozzy spray!

Toward the middle of june all the mozzys or some type of fly hatch and they can be a little bit of a pain so remember to get some repellent and for a couple of days eat inside the restaurants, as they seem to be worse at dusk. I don't get bitten but it was a nuisance when they wanted to share my food because i won't even do that with my husband!!

  • Water and such

We always bring a backpack when we go to the beach as it affords us a place to store the camera and extra water out of the sun. It even makes a good pillow. Good sturdy shoes if you are going to climb on all the rocks here or if you are going into the hills. Bring some sandals or buy some at the local market, as the sand gets real hot during the...

  • Don't Forget Insurance

If your current health insurance doesn't cover you while your abroad, you should consider getting international travel insurance just in case something should go wrong.

  • Ordering fish by the kg

Lots of the best restaurants near the harbour sell fish dishes by the kg, if this makes you nervous about the final bill don,t be put off. The waiters are really friendly and quite rightly proud of their local produce and will explain what the different types of fish are like if you fancy trying something totally new. We have never once been ripped...
