Since tourism was discovered as a very important activity, most municipalities plan a wide animation program to fill summer nights.
It's a good idea to check the programs - for instance, in Faro we had unexpectedly a great international folk festival giving life to the port.

At Christmas, there isn't one! A 'nice', suburban place with a few shops and some restaurants and yuppie bars. If you want anything else, don't go to Faro. (Just about all of the punk/rock/indie bars we could find on the web were shut but if you are stuck there, try Association do Musica, a big shed past the train station going out of town; it does rock nights.) Oh, and it pours with rain at that time of year.

May have been mistaken but off the island of Tavira it didn't appear that there was much of a nightlife - we watched listen to the local choir strangle some cats but apart from that there were a spattering of bars.

As I said,we stay near Albufuria, wich is about 30 minuets from Faro this is where you will enjoy the night life. Near Albufeira there is a mile long st called the strip.full of Bars,Disco's Cafe's where you can buy any meal under the sun, also very reasonable.

It's the Ria Formosa, a proteted area, with a wide variety of animals and plants. This is a view from Cabanas, where we can take dinner with such a view in the open air.
