This is Faro's food market and we found out about it by asking at the hotel reception. It's a little bit ouside the pedestrianised centre and even though we had a map, not all the streets are listed so it took us a while to find it. The building is very modern with a supermarket on the lower level and some shops and cafes upstairs around the main market. It was lunchtime when we got there and things had quietened down a bit ,but we still enjoyed an extended browse round stalls bursting with mouthwatering food.
Here we shopped for lunch and had a picnic on a park bench afterwards. We bought chorizo sausage, cheese, bread, cherries, almond and figs. The figs were very eye catching, flattened out into a star shape with almonds pressed into the points. In truth, they were of a leathery consistency and I discovered I prefer my figs in Fig Rolls. But everything else was delicious and we enjoyed some banter with the stallholders during our purchases. If you're a foodie , don't miss out on a trip to this market. You will love the colourful displays and take hundreds of photographs.
Unbelievably little. All the market produce is very reasonably priced Theme: Food and DrinkAddress: Largo Dr Francisco Sa Carneiro.8000-151, FaroPhone: 289 897 250Directions: Outside the pedestrianised city centre, about a 15 minute walk from the port. Off Rua DR Candido Guerreiro

Not far from the airport you'll see the Forum Algarve, an open air shopping mall with a hypermarket and cinema attached on one of the main routes into Faro. The whole place has been developed nicely, with an upstairs food court where we had a quick drink at the Flunch serve-yourself buffet (just over 4 euros for 2 cold beers and soft drink). Aside from a good-sized C&A clothes store, most of the other shops are quite small and upmarket. I think that is because the Jumbo hypermarket is the main attraction for the most visitors and it was where we made a beeline at the start of our holiday.
Inside Jumbo you'll find clothes, books, music, DVDs and kitchenware but the main focus is food and drink. The bakery is good, the seafood section is enormous and you will find plenty of meat and sausages for your barbecue. Make sure you have your fruit & veg weighed at the counter before heading for the checkout. Unlike Spanish hypermarkets, they didn't ask to see ID when paying by credit card. The wine selection is vast with many affordable tipples, but almost completely biased towards Portugal's own offerings. We saw ONE Spanish wine on sale, so for our favourite rioja we had to make a special trip over the border later during the holiday. On our first visit here it was midday and fairly quiet, so we were able to park out front. Underground car parking is available but I wasn't ready to tackle it in our new rental car. Later in the week we popped in on a Saturday afternoon but it was so busy we gave up looking for a space and drove on.
If you are big fans of Spanish rioja, but holidaying in Portugal, look for wines featuring Tinto Roriz or Aragonez grapes, as these are the same as the tempranillo grapes which make the finest riojas. We greatly enjoyed the Portuguese wines we tasted, even though we never paid more than 5 euro for one from the shops. And if you're after sherry, try white port instead. It's across from a complex called Faroshopping, which looks much smaller.Website: http://www.faroairportguide.com/shopping.htm
