This is a very basic Portugese restaurant just up from Praia Dona Ana. It doesn't look too great from the outside, but the steaks are something else! They do the most amazing kebabs, too, and you get vast portions of food at a very reasonable price. You will even get a bottle of dessert wine to keep you company free of charge while you are paying your bill!
Any steak will be cooked to perfection, but try the Brazilian style. Off the beaten track next to Hotel Tivoli Lagos you'll will find this hidden gem. Nothing special regarding interior just a typical local restaurant. Staff a bit reserved but if you take the first step you'll get a good interaction and some smiles. I hade the grilled swordfish platter and this was absolutely perfect. This meal is something that I will remember long after all other memories of Lagos has faded. If you want to eat typical algarvian cooking and to be sure to get really fresh ingredients and also be sure to have it in a typical local setting. This is the place for you.

We were seduced by the tables in the sun and the cool-looking chairs. I was concerned. Switzerland is one of the few countries in the world where I actively avoid the local food. There's only so much cheese, bread and potatoes a man can eat. But the secluded tables in the sun had us. Oops. The salad was pathetically small, and all the interesting bits were recently liberated from tins. Rachel's cheese plate was better (some people have a higher cheese threshhold), but then again, arranging cheese isn't really that easy to screw up. Worst: the whole meal cost nearly EUR20 each. Do not eat at the A Vaca Swiss restaurant. Perhaps admire the chairs. Even order a beer. But only eat there if you like to part with unnecessary sums of cash for small amounts of utterly bland food. The Swiss have enough money. In Lagos, spend yours elsewhere.
Cheese. Even the Swiss can't fukc up cheese. Leave a Comment Theme: German/AustrianPrice: US$31-40 » Currency ConverterComparison: most expensiveAddress: Right in the centre

by Julialondon The man who owns this restaurant is very friendly and welcoming. In Portugal before you order your meal, you get what I believe is reffered to as Couvert or something along those lines. At Gilberto's the Couvert is enough to fill you up on its own. Olives, bread, pate's and a large piece of local cheese. We went to Gilberto's twice (we ate there on our last night because it was the best restaurant we had tried all week. The first time we had the traditional Portuguese fish stew which between the two of us contained no less than 10 fish steaks. We couldn't finish it all but it was amazing. The second time my husband had the portuguese steak and I had the pork with clams. Both meals were spectacular. You would not necessarily know the quality of this restaurant from its appearance. Most of the menu is handwritten, there are pictures of the food on the wall, and Gilberto has wallpapered the outside with hand drawn pictures and descriptions of the food. It put some people off, but thankfully not us. Many people bypassed this restaurant while we were eating and ate in the mediochre and expensive restaurant next door. On our last night Gilberto gave us a free glass of port on the house, and he also makes the best Sangria in town. Five stars, if I ever go back to Lagos, Gilberto's will be my first port of call.
The pork with clams. This consists of diced porks, with clams in their shells and cubed fried potatos drenched in lemon juice and seasoning garnished with pickled vegetables. I've tried to make it at home since, but sadly it is not the same! Look, atmosphere, wine and ambience: great. There though, the good things stopped. We were seated in seconds, but then neglected for over 10 minutes. The menu looked OK. We ordered two different fish dishes. Both uninspired to the pont of blandness. It seemed as though the chef might have known this: both dishes were so heavily salted, they were close to inedible. Couldn't wait to leave. We learned later that they'd only recently opened. They need to get their act together. This was one of the most charming eateries we found in Lagos. It woudl be a shame if they never managed to be more than skin deep.
The wine. The best Verde we tried. Anyone who visits portugal nowadays, comes over with the heart set on trying the so talked about grilled sardines with spuds and salad. Well, You should try other portuguese traditional dishes. Some people are not mad about dried cod, but if you tried the ''Bacalhau a gomes de sa'' you'd love it! Its basicly cod in the oven with sliced fried potatoes, onions and sliced boiled egg, parsley, black olives, and drizzled with a generous amount of olive oil. Another dish you should try is ''Cozido a portuguesa'' Portuguese stew. Traditionally eaten on sundays, this dish requires some days of antecipation. Pork meat, beef brisket, chicken, belly pork, linguica (a kind of rough salami sausage), portuguese black pudding, its all the meat used on the stew. the pork meat is previously salted, as pork is quite sweet if it doesnt have a reasonable amount of seasoning. In another pot, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, swede and other vegetables are cooked in a meat stock. The meat is then cut in generous bits, and served with the vegetables. this resembles a very peasant like dinner but believe me you will come back for more! The home made bread coming out of the oven with some proper butter is also delicious. the olives, ''migas'' (a porridge made of stale bread with garlic, olive oil and some herbs), fried spare ribs marinated in bell pepper paste, fried eels with tomato rice. Portuguese egg custard puff pastry tarts... These are only some of the specialties you can explore! And at a reasonable price in most of the traditional restaurants out there, between £15 and £20 for two! that includes wine and all the starters. I just hope you fit in the plane when you come back home ;) Theme: LocalComparison: least expensive

Once, Linda's was a bona fide beach shack. EU regulations forced them to pull down the original and rebuild in wood to tight specifications from the ground up. Never visited the old one, but it had a great reputation. What they have now, however, is superb. Smart looking and feeling. Relaxed atmosphere with great and attentive service. They deserve to build a reputation just as good as the original. They don't open beyond 8pm except on Fridays for a BBQ . Find them here: N37 06.338' W8 40.008'
I had the Thai Chicken. It was a cooler day and I needed something warming. It was that and more. O CANTINHO DO PORT ALBA What can I say? This is a real find. The place is so good we went three times. Had we stayed longer we would have went again. The food is tremendous. It is a mixture of Portugeuse and International dishes, some of which you won't see in any other restaurant in Lagos. "Alba bu Grath" - this is strips of tender rump steak in a drambuie and mushroom cream served with saffron rice - mmmm. The swordfish is cooked to perfection. It is not overdone like a lot of places. The prawns and chicken dishes are terrific. For all the ladies and the sweet toothed men have the chocolate mousse with baileys, dreamy! The prices are very good and the restaurant has a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The owners Iain and Isabelle are extremely friendly as is Adrianne (the wonderful Romanian waiter)! My sis and I are going back to Lagos in October and this will be our first port of call. If you go up the Rua Candidho dos Reis (Mullens is on your right hand side) take the first right turn after this and you will see a sign just a few metres up the street on the right hand side. (It is on the Rua Luis de azevedo) Bueno appetito!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Tell Iain, Isabelle and Adrianne that you seen this review on the website) Their telephone number is 96 969 1814.
Everything is a favourite! Theme: OtherComparison: about averageAddress: Rua Luis de azevedoDirections: Go past Mullens (Mullens on right hand side) then turn first right.

by Walopkov Located in a quiet area. Very kind and dedicated staff. The owner will prepare a flambé (beef or fish) next tot your table. Very reasonable prices. This might be the restaurant in Lagos with the best value for money. We have never been disapointed here. Also very appropriety for lunch.
The beef Flambé is absolutely top. Prepared next to your table. Great atmosphere. You may also try the Cataplana (several kinds of seafood, prepared in a copper pan). A sports bar with TV but not over loud. They have entertainment on after the restuarant closes. The food is of great quality and the cook loves Mexican and you can tell, My wife is a veggie and was well catered for on this menu ...sometimes quite hard in PortugaL The fajitas were one of the best I have tasted and also I tried the Jack Daniels Steak which was also good. If it is a warm night sit in the garden patio.
